DRG trips

Had a really pretty flight to Pemberton for lunch yesterday. Lucky to live where I do.

Re: DRG trips

Amazing weather on the coast these past few weeks. Went to Vargas yesterday and saw a wolf on the beach.

Re: DRG trips

Not going anywhere, but I poured the first three post footings for my hangar yesterday. 41ft (inside) by 40ft, gravel floor for now but I will pour a slab later. I live on an Island and concrete is expensive to get here. I bought a mixer and will just pour the floor in 10 x 10 sections when I get motivated.

Post and beam walls (6 X 6 fir) and then a truss package for the roof. Tin all around, door in the back for my boat and a homemade bifold for the front in the future. My son is home for the summer to help, and hes getting paid in 170 time.

Re: DRG trips

Pretty day to fly on the coast, even if it was only 0.2hr. Crossing midfield at Texada.

Re: DRG trips

It is so much nicer working in a hangar:)

How are you doing the roof with that span?

Re: DRG trips

It is 42ft to the outside of the 6X6". I have a set of trusses arriving tomorrow.

I had considered all kinds of (cheap) ways to do a T style hangar with a single beam across the front, but in the end decided to invest the $$$ in something that I want and which will have resale value one day.

Re: DRG trips

Looks great! Careful with putting your plane in the hangar before it's completed. I know of more then one case where things went sideways and it ended up with a squished plane.

Re: DRG trips

That hangar is going to be great to have, even with a gravel floor. Is that a 170A? Looks like a B but the wings looks flat.

Re: DRG trips

Love that. Very well done video.

One question: how do you assess the firmness of a beach from the air? That was clearly a hard surface but I've also been to many beaches where I've sunk up to my ankle while wandering.

This truly is a spectacular place to fly. I flew over a bunch of it on Wednesday in a Beech 1900 with Pac Coastal. The mountains still have a lot of snow.

My next flight is a x-country solo to Sechelt. Such a beautiful area.

The airport at the very end looked a lot like Tofino. Was that Vargas?

Had a fun trip to Vargas and then on to Nootka. Pilatus was impressive.

Re: DRG trips

A really great trip to HSF. I have wanted to go for a couple of years, and it was well worth it. Left home in challenging conditions, shuffled the customs arrival for weather, and then made it through the Gorge on the first day. Easy flying from there to Dead Cow, with a nice stop at Sisters for lunch. Some spectatular flying around the area, including a visit to Tahoe Truckee. Then a great flight home with a 30 kt tailwind. Saw GS of 137 knots!

Thanks Rob. Sorry I did not get to meet you, I know you have a lot of 170 knowledge that I could have learned from.

I think one of the best things about HSF was the amazing amount of talent and knowledge that people are so generous with sharing.

Re: DRG trips

Lots of vehicles at the west end of the strip at Woss in your photo. Nobody there when I was there a few weeks earlier. Was something going on that day?
