Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I've got my Drift mounted on my wing and the remote normally gets the job done eventually - the camera is about 5 meters out versus the stated 3m range. I was hoping to get some footage with the camera up on top of the fin, but that's closer to 7 or 8 meters from the cockpit and all of the fuselage structure to go through. Definitely didn't work out when I tried with the camera sitting on the fin.

Are there any electronics geniuses here that know if it would be possible to use a bigger battery (and likely modify some electronics) to boost the power and range of the remote? Would it be possible to make a repeater of some sort to extend the range with an RF remote?

OK here's a little contribution from the Caveman Flyin. A little late but better late than never, called A Thousand Miles From Nowhere.

For those of you that use/wear helmets, the HD170 does a great job showing the POV angle, which is kinda cool and different.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

A quick "Heads Up" for those of you who get a spare Drift HD170 battery.

On the one I got from The Clymb the side away from the silk screened label had a peel off clear plastic protective sheet that was totally non-obvious.

Turns out if the protective film is not peeled off the battery can get jammed in the camera and it takes some work to get it out.

Lesson: If you have a spare battery, make sure you peel off the protective plastic film before inserting.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I've tried a lot of action camera strut mounts for my Maule MX-7-180. The best (and cheapest) solution that I've found is a 12 inch section of 1 inch (outer diameter) PVC pipe mounted under the strut up near the wing. The bicycle handlebar mount that comes with all the action cameras clamps over the forward end of the PVC pipe. Use a short section of foam meant for a bicycle handlebar that slides over the PVC pipe to cushion it against the strut and protect your paint. Take a long, sturdy bungee cord (about 36 inches long) and hook one end on the rear edge of the PVC pipe then run it forward and backward over the strut and around the PVC pipe two times. While wrapping the bungee cord around the PVC pipe on the rear section, make sure it goes between the rear bungee hook and the strut to keep the metal bungee hook from rubbing against the strut. The final wrap of the bungee cord should be to the rear and hook it on the PVC pipe end like the starting hook. Wrapping the bungee cord around the PVC pipe several times like this prevents the PVC pipe from turning. It's a very sturdy arrangement, costs very little, protects the strut and is easy to install or uninstall quickly without any tools. I'll post a picture later.

I've been looking at the Drift HD170 Stealth camera and your review cinched it for me, Matt. Thanks.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Ok this is for your video geeks out there.

I collected three time lapse movies on my HD 170 Stealth this past weekend trip to Stehekin. Image every 720p two seconds. I now have one set of files of 824 individual images I am trying to stitch into a movie using Corel VideoStudio Pro X4.

Problem is I cannot seem to make the movie look relatively smooth. It jumps markedly. The controls available to me are Hours:minutes:seconds:frames.

Any thought on this? Have message into user BB at Corel but think it probably is a pretty simple solution.

Thoughts?

Tom, I use a frame rate of 0.03 or seconds (or 20 frames per second).

I'm not familiar on how to adjust the picture length with Corel, but I'm sure with some searching in the net you can find out.

Here's a link to a picture of the PVC pipe mount that I use for the action camera.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Since MountainMatt talked about his new computer I have been pining for one. I have priced all kinds and looked at doing my own build. I then went to a friends house who has a Mac, we talked macs and before I knew it he went with me to see a guy on Craigslist who dealt only with Mac's. I now own my very own Mac Pro with 2x3 GHz dual core intel Xeon and 16GB memory! (1Tb drive and I can put 3 of my current drives in the 3 open bays) It is absolutely fantastic and it is not even the newest version. I made the following video using it. Not once did the computer crash or lock up! (My last video I had to restart a dozen times and wait about 4 hours for the 3 minute video to render) Sooooo..... I would reccomend a Mac for video editing. (And it only cost $1350)

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I switched to a Mac Book several years ago and really love it. I don't really know how to fully utilize it, but it sure seem to work good with zero trouble.

I got a Drift a few weeks ago and have been shooting some video. It sure is a huge improvement over any other cam I have used.

One thing that I think is way cool is the time lapse shots people have posted. I am assuming I can figure out how to do that.......

From the last guy on earth who does not have a Facebook or Twitter account, I can tell you it can be done. Not easily, for me, but it can be done. Now gotta figure out how to get the sound track in.

I posted this on the NW Fly-ins as well with more detailed description.
