What electronic ones are the best? And do I really a electric one?

Reuben

PS this is for a student pilot.

Re: E6Bs

Well, I'll jump in here on this one:
The good ol' E6B whiz wheel is one of my favorite toys... it can do sooo much, and only requires brain power. No internet connection or batteries!
Best of all, the simple time and fuel calculations require setting the Rate Arrow only once for multiple readings, where the electronic versions require endless key-punching. My choice is time spent with the instruction booklet, and the satisfaction of being able to operate this venerable pilot's tool.
But then, that's just one guy's opinion...

Re: E6Bs

yeah just when 'bout all you have is what it takes to get a ipad, you want something cheaper so you can fly more. and anything with 3g internet is out for me due to school rules were I am going. I am going to a boarding academy called Oklahoma Academy they have a flight training program and hopefully I will be able to get into it this year but that all depends on money... Also I will have no internet other than the assigned email that they give me. I am leaving thursday.

which one is best electric or manual?

Re: E6Bs

My vote is for the manual one. My flight bag already weighs a ton without a bunch of stupid electronic gizmos that are only used to hold dead batteries.

Re: E6Bs

Everyone in my ground school got an electronic on but me. They both do the same thing but the manual one converts dollars to pesos too! I think if you can master the manual one your money ahead. Haven't used mine since I got my license.

PS, the guy that invented it is a genius!!!

Re: E6Bs

The Wiz wheel,(Manual) is much better to have and keep. You will learn more with it, and it will still work a year or two later next time you drag it out to use it.
If you ever start flying as a commercial line pilot, and have to perform calculations for every flight, then you might want an electronic one.

Re: E6Bs

I would echo what others have said. If you are a student, and want to have something usable, that never breaks/needs batteries/requires updates/cords/chargers, get the manual E6B. The plain, vanilla version.

I still have the one from my student pilot days in 1973. I later got an old one from the 50s, (larger, easier to read...(ahem)); and still use that.

X 2, no batteries required only brain power. Cheaper

Re: E6Bs

I was forced to used the manual one but the Sporty's iPod/iPhone app was $10 well spent...

I found it to be a lot faster on the ground for preflight planning and it was more accurate. In the air I used the Wiz Wheel, mostly because I was being supervised.

Re: E6Bs

desertrat pm sent.

thanks to all for the help and for the good luck wishes. I hope I like the school but I am a bit apprehensive about going because I have never been in a school setting because I have been home schooled and because I have never been away from home. For those who would like to know more about the school here is their website. http://www.oklahomaacademy.org/

Re: E6Bs

I like several of the others above would point you towards the manual E6B.

I use the same one that I got as a student in the early 70's and the batteries have yet to run out. 8)

I have tried the electronic ones and while they give you a multiple decimal point answer, my feeling is you don't have to think through the question as completely as you would on the manual. It's like doing math in your head or turning off your electronic navigation gear on occasions to keep you mind in the game in case the calculators, gps units, and iPhone -Pad get lost or go Tango Uniform.

The plane will fly without these items and the mark one eyeball coupled to the on-board wet-ware computer can go a long way to getting you safely to your destination in a pinch.

Totally agree, once you see the inter-relations of the numbers using the wheel you get to where you can do the easier stuff in your head. Its all basic "solving for X" type algebra.

Get the wheel and start solving the Hell out of it. You'll get to where you can use it quicker than the electronic one.

Re: E6Bs

hey guys! I thought I would drop in and give you a update.

So far I like it here at school. All besides that I got my tooth broken out on orantation  ... ran into a hard headed kid...!

I was able to go flying sun day in a 52 C-170B it was windy but I still have a mountain of fun. I am also hoping to be able to sign up for the flight training program soon. As of right now there is 3 students taking with the possiblity of 3 more signing up.

Reuben

PS will be getting kings shortly.
