Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Electroair Electronic Ignition System

Is anyone on the Forum using the Electroair Electronic Ignition system on a C182? I have been thinking about it and would appreciate any field reports and/or personal experience on the 182.

A friend put one on his C172 and the results are very good.

Thanks

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Not on a 182 but on an experimental. Never any issues and never a hiccup. I have 1 electronic and 1 mag. When the mag dies it'll be replaced by a Pmag. Night and day difference between it and the magneto as to smoothness and performance

I've been looking into this for my 180 as well, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

So are you running with just your EI or do you run on both it and the mag?

Re: Electroair Electronic Ignition System

I've been looking at these quite a bit, and a mechanic/friend of mine has installed a couple. My conclusion is the biggest significant advantage is a fuel burn that seems to run 1-1.5 gal/hr. Many say if you have fuel injection, it eliminates the hot start issues?? Smoothness at idle is acknowledged by many. I have also read about being able to idle at a lower rpm, which I thought might let you land little shorter????
In the neighborhood of $6000.00, so, fly a lot, and it should be worth it.
I say, go for it, and let me know haw ya like it :D

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

I wonder if there's any anecdotal info regarding electronic ignition and making TBO. Car motors definitely live much longer than the old point ignition and carburetor days. Lower sulphur fuel is definitely a factor as is EFI but better ignition probably doesn't hurt. It might help take a little of the sting out of the capital costs. It's on my list for the 180 for sure.

I run both just in the off chance the EI failed. there is no noticeable difference one way or the other with the mag on or off. But running on mag only it runs like dogshit (comparatively). It would get ya home, but not even close to the smoothness the EI provides.

Re: Electroair Electronic Ignition System

I put one on an experimental Bearhawk O-540 on the left mag. The experimental coil pack mounted on the firewall (maybe not the same as the STC version) made it necessary to glue a compensating supermagnet on the panel deck in order to obtain acceptable compass deviation. Additionally, using a keyed ignition switch routinely caused a backfire when switching from the right to left mag. Electroair said their unit took a few milliseconds to spool up after being shut down while checking the right mag. They suggested switching the ignition switch connections, but that wouldn't solve much, as it would still backfire going clockwise with the key. They may have solved that with the STC version, though. Also, on 110 deg days, I would need to shut off the advance, as it would bump up CHT 20-25 deg F, and I like to be 400 or less. The improvement in performance seemed to be about 2 kts IAS.
