Energy Management Turns by soyAnarchisto

I flew with soyAnarchisto in his J-3 Cub and he did some contact flying stuff. He did very well.

Re: Energy Management Turns by soyAnarchisto

I was trying to find and old picture of Leach field and came up with a good crop dusting video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-sPjqOYGI8 Like I was pointing out with soyAnarchisto, the energy management or crop duster turn doesn't have to be as aggressive as when we are doing back and forth work at low density altitude. This Air Tractor 301 is working heavy, high, and warm. While he is not making sixteen second turns, he is still using good energy management technique. He pulls up wings level out of the fastest cruise possible in low ground effect in the field, He is trading that kinetic energy of pressure airspeed for altitude. Next he starts a turn to a target (the next swath row.) This is a target, not a heading, and he is race tracking rather than going back in fifty feet from where he came out. While this turn is only moderately steep, he gave up altitude throughout the turn. He was using gravity thrust to increase airspeed to offset the vertical lift lost in the bank. He might be able, with six hundred horses, to maintain altitude in the turn. But why would he want to do that. No matter how much power we have, we never know when load and conditions might require all that power plus good energy management. And he wants to be at three feet in the field anyway. soyAnarchisto was at 500 feet and didn't necessarily need to manage energy. But why not. It is a safer, no load factor, turn and he is not under IFR or hemispheric rule anyway. Finally, the Air Tractor pilot levels the wing prior continuing the descent over the wire and pulling back on the stick to level off at three feet. This is critical, not only to prevent hooking a wire with a wing, but to prevent graveyard spiral effect. soyAnarchisto didn't need to miss a wire, but leveling the wing first was safer and prevented graveyard spiral effect.

The energy management, no load factor, turn is the safer turn in any situation. In maneuvering flight, including that done around the airport, it is critical. Students not using energy management turns will nearly stall the airplane more often around the airport than anywhere else.

Re: Energy Management Turns by soyAnarchisto

I found it Greg.

Since CFOT, Aktahoe, and I are putting a SMFT video series together, I decided to bring this one back up.

CFOT has put together some excellent video and is working on how to post it.

Kevin is busy with CFI and High Sierra but will put some video together after.

Doug Lumgair is a CFI in Northern California who now teaches Safe Maneuvering Flight Techniques.

We are getting it done.
