Engine Analyzer--Which One?

If things go well, I'll be the proud owner of a '99 T206H next week (fingers crossed). I want to change/upgrade the panel a bit and am wondering which monitor to go with.
The choices I've narrowed it to are the new CGR-30P, the JPI 800, or the much more costly MVP 50. I really like the screen size of the MVP 50 (who doesn't) but it's about 40% more expensive. Is it worth it? If not, which of the smaller two would you choose and why? Please educate me.

I have been using the Insight G1. It's not a big screen, but I've never once wished it was bigger. The thing weighs about half as much as an iPhone, and works great!

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

I'd go with the CGR-30P. It is certified as a primary guage and I didnt think the jpi 800 was. I believe the CGR is the cheapest of the certified primaries.

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

I have a JPI 700 that I put in 2001. Some of the bars are missing on the display but other than that it has worked flawlessly. I added a Fuel Flow to the panel later ( should have popped for the 800 at the time w/ fuel flow....false economy. I have called their customer service a couple of times and was pleased with their answers and response time.

The size of the display and how it is laid out gives me the info I need in a compact display. I guess you can go larger, but not sure what additional information you would get since I have never flown with the larger unit.

Have fun w/ new bird!

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

I have the MVP-50 in my Husky and LOVE it! Yes it is worth it. Had the JPI 7 or 800 (forgot which one) in my 185 years ago, good unit but having to constantly flip thru pages to get the info you want to see got old. The MVP-50 displays a lot of info that is easy to quickly scan on one page. There are many pages in the unit for additional info, simply fantastic unit. Once again, YES it is worth it!

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

Indeed. Hands down go with EI. Much better product. I installed the MVP in the Skywagon. Im going thru the testing phase (ground runs and taxis) and the thing blows my mind. I have it talking with the 430 and the info is insane.

FYI on the 30P. Really nice unit, but you dont get as much as you do with the MVP. To get the full functionality, you have to install two 30p's. Its also not just the 3" unit, there is an EDC that gets mounted behind the panel some where along with several other modules (vac, MP, fuel, etc...) If I wasnt doing a full panel over, I'd go with two 30Ps.

I'd do the MVP again in a heartbeat.... and an added bonus is that EI has been amazing with support and install assistance. So reachable and willing to help with the silliest question. Great guys/company.

We had the MVPs in our 182s in the fixed-wing multi-engine qual course. Very nice units. Tied to the 530's

Have had the mvp in my skywagon for years and would not go back. And as Big Renna said their customer service is amazing.

I also have the G1. I bought the first one sold in the US, before it was FAA-approved with an STC, although it had the Transport Canada STC approval--we used a 337/field approval based on the Canadian STC. A couple weeks after it was installed, the FAA STC approval came through.

I had a glitch, however, when it came time to upgrade the software last year--it wouldn't upgrade. But Insight sent me a new one, asking that I return the old one after the new one was installed, which I did. The new one has worked flawlessly, and the very recent upgrade just a couple of weeks ago worked properly.

I've had a number of email exchanges with the folks at Insight, and they're very responsive to questions, even some of the inane ones I've asked. :)

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

I'm not sure why the Insight analyzers haven't gotten more attention. I hadn't heard much of them and flew in a bird that had one. We quickly installed the G1 in my skywagon. If I didn't already have the EI fuel flow, I'd have done the G2. I love it. Wouldn't change a thing.

Re: Engine Analyzer--Which One?

Take a look at the JPI EDM 900. It's basically a mini JPI EDM 930. Certified primary replacement for all your engine gauges. Inexpensive. Will mount in a 3 1/8" hole.
