Enough Zoom Already…

I’ve been catching up on a bunch of posts lately, both old and new, and I’ve gotta say enough with the zoom…. LOL. All everybody’s talking about is zoom… Zoom zoom zoom… In a canyon; zoom. Ice?; Zoom. See the new BT-16s?; freaking zoom. This place is like zoom.com now. It’s making me miss the EZ Flap. Hahaha.

Only fly high enough to recover from inadvertent stall and only make straight in approaches and you can forget about zoom reserve airspeed.

WTF is “zoom” that you are referring too?

Read Stick and Rudder concerning the law of the roller coaster, zoom reserve (either airspeed or altitude), and how airspeed or zoom reserve irrespective of power is altitude and how altitude irrespective of power is airspeed...that zoom.

Personally, I think the only thing that'll help with your zoom problem is a little more cowbell.

Unfortunately, Wolfgang, concepts without a V speed or some number that can be added to a POH or entered into a computer do not exist in modern aviation. What can we call something that will keep the wing flying without assigning a number? And what if it is already built into the airplane just waiting for pilots to screw it up.

Concerning inadvertent stall when too low to recover (maneuvering flight problem), we all can truly say, "I don't do that."

We are backcountry, right? What would we need with a maneuvering flight energy management theory or technique taught by a German test pilot for Cessna or used by Ag and other low altitude maneuvering pilots to stay alive without an airspeed indicator. We are just enjoying the sites and have plenty of time to manage energy with a combination of airspeed indication and high altitude contact flying skills. No problem, right?

Fun teasing a little bit about Zoom reserve on this thread. I appreciate Jim's words of wisdom on this subject. You have helped me become a better and safer STOL/ Backcountry pilot through your explanations of zoom reserve. You can never have enough Zoom reserve especially when flying low and slow. I teach these techniques to every student I train - from privates to experienced aviators.
