Extended dipstick for O-470
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
Does anyone know where to find one? McFarlane doesn't sell them. Tired of dripping oil all over the engine every time we check it.
Thanks!

And just which way would you like this dipstick extended? My mental model of an O-470 dipstick does not show a longer one solving the problem. In my O-470 extending it down won't help with an accurate level and extending its handle will make it impossible to close the oil door. I stick a rag by the oil dipstick receptacle. Usually it is only a drop or two that drips...
Best,
Tom

Well short fielder obviously understands better than I. But now I am curious... Is it just longer such that the stick never leaves the tube? Inquiring minds you know...
Thanks,

Thanks; I may already have one in my IO-470F and just didn't know it. As I understand it, the dipstick is an airframe part specified by the plane manufacturer and not Continental in this case

I didn't get what you meant at first either.
I have such a dipstick / tube installed on my '53 180, it was cobbled together when they installed the K engine.
Works good though--
pulling it out far enough to check the oil leaves it still in the tube, hence little-to-no drip.

Trying to order the correct Dip Stick for the O-470 can be quite trying.
Even for and old pro.
My friends 180 had started out on floats with a missionary outfit. The pilot at some time in the planes early history caught a power line or two just above the floats.
The plane landed a bit bent and on its back- there after known as the Missionary Lady. By the time my friend Woody bought the plane it was on wheels.
Took us a while to figure out why 12 qts. always showed TOO full.
Lesson was that there are several dip-sticks and they differ according to how and on what the engine is mounted, then there are the "extended-drip-less"
We never could get one using parts catalog that really told the truth.
Ended up leaving the "flat mounted" seaplane stick and just subtracted 2 qts. from the indicated scale now that the rear of the plane was on the ground, which caused more of the oil to end up towards the rear of the case.
Have fun with yer dip sticks
But above all be safe.
