FAA employees/pilots

Split from Fish&Game pilot crash...

james wrote: As an example if a pilot lands on an island in the middle of a river and ground loops due to pilot error he or she would most likely receive a 44709 Reexamination, or counseling. A 44709 Reexamination is common after an accident involving pilot error. The FAA just wants to determine if the pilot is still competent to operate an aircraft safely.

Interesting....

In the case of an off road/true backcountry fender-bender only accident, is this examination of competency limited to the specialized skills and experience needed to safely operate in that narrow environment, or is it looking to see if the pilot can meet the basic skills level for his/her certificate level? Seems very apples and oranges to me.

The guys who work and play safely in the fat tires and push the envelope world certainly have basic skills honed to a level most folks can't touch, even then mishaps do happen. What is to be gained from a 44709 in a situation like that? Part of flying off road is understanding that shit doth happen. You fix it, learn from it, and do it again just smarter and better next time.

To me the difference is that of taking a turn too fast on my dirt bike and dumping it vs wrecking my car on a public road. Dirt bike, I haul it off, put new parts on, and off I go. No one's business but my own. Public road, I expect a police report and ticket if I screwed up. Like I said, apples and oranges.

Gump you are trying to reason with the feds  It is a no win situation. Nice to know we have an FAA "Inspector" on the site :?

Re: Taylorcraft Removed From Salmon River Today

[quote="james"]Hello Backcountry Pilots,
I am the FAA Inspector task with investigating the 1983 Taylorcraft accident on December 30, 2008. .

My position with the FAA precludes me from commenting on the specifics of this accident, Our accident investigation will continue with an interview on Monday accompanied with an FAA Airworthiness Inspector to determine possible maintenance issues too. My job is to determine operational/pilot issues.

I have found the previous comments in this forum interesting and informative. James

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

nice work, Z. when this thread started, i thought it was nice to see that
little dose of reality with the bird in the drink. he must have done a pretty
good job putting it in and getting out and then hiking up river for the nite.
having wrecked one, it has made, and will make him, a much better pilot
as far as flyin' it to the ground, in order to have all involved walk away.
regardless of the details, give the guy a pat on the back...!
these piston motors we all push around in the sky, have certain limitations
and are just air-cooled boxer's. most are not fuel-injected, not water-cooled, and have quite a few issues, as good as they are.

I know several guys that wrecked and didnt take a 709 ride. Know several guys that havent wrecked but should get a 709 ride.

I dont see what the big deal is unless you dont know how to fly.

I was told by the feds that I should "clean up my act". That's what they call a formula 409 checkride.
