Fabric Health

Whilst trying to help out a neighbor resurrect his Rans S-7, which has been in storage with the wings off for a few years now, he casually mentioned some light coming thru the top fabric on a sunny day. Before disassembly it spent 7 years in the NorCal sun. Below is a couple pictures from the inside of the wing with my very bright streamlight held up to the top of the wing.

Fist shot looks like just inadequate coverage of ekofill (Stewart System).Image
Second shot is very strange. It looks like the fabric was masked for the glue in preparation for tapes and then once the tapes were adhered just the tapes were ekofill’d leaving little triangles unprotected Image
between the pinked edges.

Is punch testing still the best way to determine if the fabric along these ribs is compromised? It seems like the maule tester might be too invasive this close to the wing structure.

Recovering the wings is certainly a bummer but it may be what’s next.

Re: Fabric Health

I would just make a patch to cover the area. You could do it per Stewarts method, but the easiest would be like colored oratex and iron that on and your done. You could paint it to match if you'd like.

Re: Fabric Health

It is Stewart's systems for sure? I know with Aortex coatings the light shines right through and that is normal. It does look like Stewart's though. That is unfortunate. If it punch tested ok with a Maupe tester you could just sand it and do another coat or 2 of ekofill. Adds weight but saves from doing a complete recover...

Re: Fabric Health

The pinks are bare because they sanded all the Ekofill off. Happens often. Looks like it's lacking Ekofill all over to me. If you really want to know, cut out an inspection hole and pull test a 1" wide strip. That gives the true strength. Maule testers aren't accurate at best, and to do the test, you need to take all the paint and fill coats off anyway, to get a true reading.
Looks like a lot of work ahead, but if it's still strong enough, you might get some flying out of it before you need to recover, especially if you sand it and lay some more Ekofill down. You wont have to sand it off...just a good, scuff and break the surface with 320, then come back with Ekofill and topcoat.
You wont gain any real appreciable weight by respraying...maybe a couple pounds. What year was it covered?
I am a tech-rep for Stewart Systems, so feel free to holler.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

Re: Fabric Health

John's idea is the best for sure. A 1" strip so you can do a tear test is the best...

Re: Fabric Health

When I bought my Citabria the fabric looked great at 20', especially if someone poked you in the eye first. I asked my IA (and a couple others) about it, assuming I was in for a recovering job soon. The price I got it for accounted for that.

They all shrugged it off and said it was fine. When I asked about punch testing I was told that it's not a valid test for polyester fabric (which is what pretty much all of us are using regardless of the "system") because it will always pass.

I kept the plane in a hangar and flew it 4 years before selling it. Still looks exactly the same.
