Felix's space jump - Live

Chute has opened. I don't think he beat the freefall time record, but he got the altitude record.

Re: Felix's space jump - Live

Can't have both, either go for freefall time at min ROD or speed record at max ROD which will shorten his freefall time. Amazing the freefall record was set in 1960! Visor fogging must have been a major annoyance.

Felix's space jump - Live

That's the coolest thing I've watched in a long time.

Once you pass like 80k it actually starts warming up again, but ya, it could've jumped at at depress too probably.

Congrats Felix! Very proud!

Re: Felix's space jump - Live

Well done Felix!!

Well done RedBull

Well done YouTube

Well done GoPro... I'm sure we're gonna see the output of those chest and suit cams pretty soon. Friggin' scary watching that spin/tumble on the IR camera. What RPM do you get to before your head explodes? No air damping to make it stop either. Next pressure suit needs some reaction control jets before the general public starts trying this. :D

Most exciting media event I've watched in years. Thx for posting the link.

I learned of that while checking their mission info page the other day...something about the ozone layer trapping heat in between strata? You can "scroll" Felix up through the atmosphere and see the data.

However, when we were seeing the live telemetry during the jump, the OAT read 11.9 F at 127K and change, then when he started depressurizing the capsule, it jumped to like 21 F.

Seriously, that was Joe Kittinger? He looks pretty good for 84! I hope I'm doing that good at that age.

Yep. Has to feel good knowing the voice of mission control has been right where you are, experienced all the same stuff. He was sharp, too! A good partner in the mission.

Joe leaving his open, unheated, unpressurized gondola in 1960 for his record setting jump. Amazing how far the technologies have come.

I agree! That was cool to watch. I was kinda holding my breath watching him tumble though during his freefall.

Re: Felix's space jump - Live

One of the coolest things I have seen for certain!

The out of control tumbling out the door was something else. No air to push against. As the air thickened he was able to get stable. I bet at that point he felt pretty good about things.
