Field Approval for 26s on a C182

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Field Approval for 26s on a C182

First off, I love mail days that involve oversized boxes.......my wife, not so much....”what the hell is that? Don’t get grease on my chair!” Haha. They’ll never understand....

Second, thanks to Aspenbasin, I’m the new owner of an airglas fork with a Goodyear 8.50, double puck brakes and 26’s for the mains on my 182. I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that the 29s come with an STC but you have to go the field approval route on 26” Goodyear’s.

I did my best to search through the 337 list and didn’t find (or overlooked) what I think I need regarding paperwork to get the 26s installed.

I’m a ways off from doing this swap but want to go ahead and get my paperwork sorted before I’m ready to pull the trigger.

If anyone has done this mod on their 182, any info you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you guys could provide.

Btw, I’ve read this thread..... does anyone know how the FAA deals with approvals between models? 180 vs. 182?

How long did it take to get this field approval?
I've had one for 26" GY's on my C180 in at the SEA FSDO for 7-1/2 months now.

Don’t know. Wasn’t on my airplane. I just ordered the CD from the FAA on an N number that I knew had done the mod.

So you still need to get the FA for your own airplane?
Please let us know how that goes.

Correct. I got my STC from Atlee Dodge this week for my wheels and brakes. The Airglas STC from Hitchcock is supposed to be here tomorrow. Once I put the STC's and a copy of this prior FA in my mechanic's hands, he's going to call our local FSDO and see if we can get it passed. Finger's crossed...

Posted this one in the KB. Click "modifications" and see under the Landing Gear section.

Hopefully it will be all finished up tomorrow although I’m also waiting on an overhauled VSI to come back before we go play.

Re: Field Approval for 26s on a C182

All done. Not sure exactly what all my mechanic had to do for the 337 but he didn't make it seem like it was any big deal. The whole process took about 2 weeks from the time I delivered him the STCs and the prior 337 shown above.

The only thing I've noticed which I want to change is to switch out the axle nuts used for the wheel pants to regular castle nuts. There's just something my OCD brain doesn't like about it otherwise.

Re: Field Approval for 26s on a C182

Looks great. If you have hollow axles I would not use regular castle nuts. The wheel pant ones keep dirt, water, and other crud out of the axles...

One cool looking bird. Love the colors and the wheels and tires make it.
