I saw ice forming on Wasilla lake yesterday when I flew over it. It was cold and windy. Time to play the pre-heat game!

If lake Hood is like that then Campbell lake is probably strong enough to skate on by now.

In Fairbanks Chena Marina's pond was 90% frozen yesterday, and International's pond was finally covered today. I used to throw a thermometer in the pond and when it gets within a couple of degrees of freezing any clear night with lots of earth infrared radiation will do it. Usually by the 10-15th of October it can happen anytime.

Pulled my last hunters out on Thursday and flew up to Hood to take the Beaver off floats, went in on Friday morning to get my headsets etc from the plane and the commercial finger was all iced over, got back to Homer and Beluga Lake was iced over.....made it in by the hair on teeth.......ummm..that is kind a gross.

Flew down to Soldotna today to visit with a friend and on the way back hit a wall of snow just south of Anchorage on the west side of the mountains. Had to turn around and fly over cook inlet and fly up the west side of the inlet.

I think winter is here.

Re: First ice on Lk Hood

I remember distinctly my first winter in Anchorage had a light snow fall on September 7th. We were told that September snows were a bit rare, but "just wait until October!" Then it snowed off and on through the next few months. But on December 24th, it was raining! The snow was all melting, and both Wife 1 and I were complaining that our very first Alaska Christmas wasn't going to be white!

But overnight, the rain turned to snow, and on Christmas morning, there was 18" on the level of new fallen snow.
