First R409 in SQ-12

This is super exciting. The R409 I mean going into a SQ-12. A bad ass motor by ACE Performance. The cylinders are the obvious clue.

As you see it in the SQ-12 it puts out 250hp running Electronic Fuel Injection and Electronic Ignition, while weighing less then a 400. Oh, and it can be set up to run on Avgas or Car gas.

It runs cooler then my O375. And not to steal away the R409's thunder but I'm told that ACE Performance's R360 puts out a bit more horsepower and torque then my O375, and weighs less.

Anyway back to the R409 in the SQ-12. The brain trusts are still working on mapping out the fuel injection and ignition, but I'm told by one of its test pilots that, running the same prop I have on my SQ2, lift off is a matter of pushing the throttle forward and popping the flaps and she's off the ground with a rate of climb of 2,000 ft a minute with just pilot and fuel. 1,800 feet a minute with 3 people and fuel. Pulled back to cruise speed with 35's burns 7.5 gph.

This isn't the entire brain trust working on this project, just the hard working ones. ;-)

Bad ass for sure. Be interesting to see how the performance shakes out once the EFII is mapped for the SQ-12. Do believe I've found the next engine for my SQ2. Finally we move past the 1950's. Hooray!

Oh, and did you notice the battery (oops, batteries) on the firewall? EarthX Lithium Iron Phosphate that weighs just a bit over three pounds. And which have the same performance as the big lead anchors or the Odyssey. Running em myself and love em. And makes it a no-brainer to add a second battery on the firewall for EFII backup, still weighing less then a single Odyssey.

Here is the first test flight takeoff - gentle to be sure. And what's with the Wx in Alaska? In nicer then here in Texas!

Looks good. What prop is on it?

I want to see Goza drive that thing in Valdez this year! I heard he was pulled away to work last year and Josh didn't have a lot of time in it. That's one bad mother 'effin plane either way!

Great article about these new engines from ACE Performance

EAA March 2015 just printed this interview with my partner Andrew. He goes into great detail about our tech and leaks some info about what is coming, check it out here:

Here is a beauty shot of three versions of our engines, 335r, 409r, and 540r.

Hey Relentless, can you get me a good deal on a X-540? 8) Maybe work out a discount deal for advertising? :D

ZZZ, you beat me, was just going to suggest that. Can't say enough how happy I am that you are making it "modern fuel" compatible.
Modern might not be the right term since Henry Ford had it figured out a 100 years ago.

Wowsa, that sounds remarkable. Will STCs be coming for installation on production aircraft, or are they focused exclusively on the E-AB market? I suppose the right mechanic might consider a 337 for installing the conversion on an existing airframe. It would be well worth considering when the current engine is run out. What compressions are they running? Any other details?

The Whirlwind is a wicked lookin' tool. They don't make a prop for an o-290. The R engines look incredible and I hope they kick some butt in the marketplace.

Re: First R409 in SQ-12

Looks like an amazing engine. Wish I could afford something like that for my plane, over the standard 540 :)

I reckon I will give the Whirlwind a go when the current blades wear out, would be a nice weight saving and I can reuse my existing Mac hub as I understand it.

Re: First R409 in SQ-12

Relentless, assuming unleaded fuel, what synthetic oil would you use in your engine? I used Delvac 5/40 full synthetic in my 2006 VW Jetta diesel that could have a cam problem from the extreme stress if the wrong oil was used.
