First world problems

Was planning a trip to Idaho but think we are going to postpone due to the fires and haze. Put in for vacation two months ago so I guess we will go somewhere. So, if you had just over a week to travel where would you go? Based in NC so thinking about Maine or northern Michigan or????

Re: First world problems

Completely understand. Planned on fly fishing at Reds Horse Ranch for four days, but smoked out. Guess I’ll ride my motorcycle.

Re: First world problems

I think I'd head for Maine and maybe swing by the Finger Lakes.

The 2018 International Sea Plane fly in Greenville, Maine (South End of Moosehead Lake) is being held Sept 6th-9th this year. if it's your first time the Katahdin Cruise is good and the Steak and Lobster dinner is tasty. Saturday weather permitting is the best spectator day for drag race style on water STOL contest viewing.

If you decided on Upper Michigan you could maybe go further west and see Madeline Island by Ashland WI. I camped out at the airport and rode my fold up bike around the island years ago.

Re: First world problems

If you end up in Michigan, take the opportunity to stop by the "Two Hearted" airstrip that was recently opened by the RAF.

Looks like a nice destination. http://theraf.org/news/2018/raf-opens-new-airstrip-michigans

This, combined with North Fox Island could make for a fun excursion.

Re: First world problems

The vote, weather cooperating, is to head for Maine. Planning on stopping in Lock Haven since I haven't been there and then on to B10 in Maine. Looks like they are having a two day fly in so figured why not! From there up to Jackman for a few days and then buzz around the area. On the way home I think we might buzz by Katama airpark next to Martha's vineyard for food and from there not sure. Either way it will be fun to spend time with my old man buzzing around looking down on all the damn yankee's........ :D

Re: First world problems

If you make it to Katama, Block island is a short flight to the west. Beautiful place, and the fishing is great. I leave a Jeep at the airport which you may use to explore the island if you wish.

Re: First world problems

Had a great time. Stopped in Lock Haven the first night to check out the Cub museum. From there on to a fly-in I found online at Bowman field. Saw a VERY nice 180 there but he didn't stay long. Had a great time. I think we won furthest traveled. From there through Greenville and on to Presque Isle. Back to Newman Field in Jackman and spent a few days at The Birches. The owner is a one of a kind. Completely laid back and extremely accommodating. From there the trip was basically about getting home so we flew down the Maine coast and stopped at Katama field next to Martha's vineyard for lunch. From there we droned along the shore of Long Island, around the armpit and ended up at Ocean City, NJ for the night. Next day we made it home. Great trip.

Ron, I hope you received my text and I want to thank you again for your generosity. I am sorry we didn't get to stop on Block Island and check it out but there is always "next time". Just under 2000 miles flown and no issues. What amazing machines we get to fly around this amazing country..... :D
