Fish lake ID

Anyone has been to Fish lake lately?
Going there in a couple of days, wanted to know how were the conditions of the airstrip.

Re: Fish lake ID

Howdy-

Even tho I live just over the ridge from Fish Lake it has been two years since I landed there. It was in good shape then and I have heard the same last summer. I usually elect to land there in late August or early September just to avoid the bugs and the bugs can be really bad!

Good luck and give us a report!

Thanks - Dave

Re: Fish lake ID

Please do post a report. Last year at this time, there was still a lot of water on the strip. Generally speaking, I think this is a bit early for Fish Lake unless it was a light snow year.

Haha...it was ANYTHING but a light snow year!

Bugs at FL have been so bad that I've started the airplane and sat in the propwash for some relief. It really gets incredibly buggy.

Don't misconstrue this as saying "don't start your engine", but at the risk of stating the obvious. Please, please, please be very careful if things get so bad that you're resorting to this. We lost a fellow pilot a couple years ago doing this. In his instance it was because the plane started to roll and he tried to stop it, but instead got hit by the prop. But there are a lot of ways for this to go wrong. So, please, be careful out there.

Re: Fish lake ID

First part of May, it was completely snow covered and the lake was about 99% frozen over. If the snow is gone, it could be pretty soft.

Re: Fish lake ID

Yesterday we were fogged in at Johnson creek part of the morning, when I took off ,most of the canyons had clouds, didnt want to venture under the overcast into them, although there were holes I didnt want to find a bank of fog in a tight canyon, so I continued to Fish lake, flying over the overcast .
Radar showed rain in Fish lake area, as I got closer some cumulus were easy to see, so I abandoned that idea and ended up going to Cavanaugh bay.

Will plan it again later in the year, if someone go please post a report.
