Floats on snow: SPA trip report

I just stumbled across this trip report from SPA, and found it interesting and nicely written. For more on the topic, I highly recommend Success on the Step: Flying with Kenmore Air, about Bob Munro's exploits on WA and BC glaciers.

Success on the Step is one of my favorite books, period. Bob Munro was the kind of guy anyone would want to work with.

This very story was the subject of a Wings Channel segue years ago (don't you miss it?) where they showed the footage of Munro doing the takeoff. Pretty awesome.

Re: Floats on snow: SPA trip report

Footage of this is played on a continuous loop in the lobby at the Kenmore Air Harbor. I recently flew over the Blue Glacier on Mount Olympus, pretty sketchy. I imagine he had a very high power setting set on the beaver to make those landings, a beaver on floats is pretty mushy @ 8000 feet. [emoji2]

I was hired to me an apprentice A&P by Kenmore just 3 days after the senior Mr. Munro passed and was able to attend the celebration they had for him in the hangar, some great stories were told that night! I was so inspired I worked there for 14 years!

That's awesome, Sam - it sounds like the family still runs a classy operation. Kenmore assisted with the pre-buy inspection and annual on the Bush Hawk when we bought it. Their guys did a great job as an advocate for us in getting a few things done on that annual that the previous owner might not have done otherwise. We had a really positive experience working with them.

Floats do make pretty decent skis but you have to remember you have NO suspension your flying and your landing serface must be very smooth!
