Tom Weiss perished in a mid-air collision October 12, 2014. He was an enthusiastic and beloved contributor here for close to 10 years, and he will be missed greatly.

Re: Flying M Ranch

I flew to the Flying M a bunch of times when I lived in the Northwest back in the 80s. I went for a couple of trail rides to chuck wagon steak dinners in the coast range and had a bunch of good meals in the main lodge. That place is a gem!

Re: Flying M Ranch

Looks like a great place to go check out. Where is it located and is anyone going there anytime soon?

Re: Flying M Ranch

Kyle here. TomW...when you flying that Supercub up to Independence? Hope your doing well. Flying M is located about 10 miles northwest of McMinville. Its on the Seattle chart. A really cool place but as you can see in the video, be aware of the terrain. There have been a couple of bad wrecks there in the past, so if your not comfortable with short field work, then use caution. The strip used to be longer, but the property of the southern half as closed it off. Only about 800 ft is usable at the northern end. Sunday mornings is when most pilots fly in for an awesome home cooked breakfast made by Grandma Barbara.

Uh, it's been a long time since I flew in there but it seems to me that the strip runs east/west? I believe that only the east half is in use these days. I haven't been there since the lodge closed but my friend Jeff goes in there fairly often. You probably know him- he lives in the Indy airpark and owns a taildragger Yankee & a Pacer.

Would be fun to meet up with you guys. I can't take the Sport Cub to Flying M specifically though per the rental agreement, but most other private strips are ok.

Anytime Zane! I am based at Independence (7S5). I am usually hanging around the airport on the weekends. This will be my first official Oregon summer and I am looking forward to explore more of Oregon flying.

Re: Flying M Ranch

So is anyone doing anything with the old "Flying M Ranch" itself? In between the lodge itself, the Bunkhouse hotel, and all the cabins, not to mention the equine facilities, there was a considerable amount of income-producing potential there-- but no doubt a big property tax bill every year too. Both times when a bunch of us from Port Townsend flew down for the weekend, they had plenty of business in the bar at night (no dout due to the live C&W music) as well as plenty of hungry eaters in the lodge for breakfast & dinner. I never understood why they closed-- did the owners sell out, just decide to shut her down, or what?
And what exactly goes on there now at midfield? Is that just a sunday morning breakfast operation, or ?

Re: Flying M Ranch

Joe posted the video on his facebook page so I just assumed. So you're starting an Oregon chapter of the Cheap Suits?
