Flying Maine?

Image

Now that I have some hours on the Skywagon project, I want to start exploring and burning some LL. Im fixing to do some trips up north into Maine. Anyone have any cool recommendations? The further north the better. Nothing too crazy as Im still getting the feel for the bird. Looking for grass/unimproved, remote, and a good place to camp. I've been going over the sectionals, but all I see are private private private. Im sure most would be welcoming as usual, but I dont really fancy landing w/out permission. NH fine also... Company welcomed so give a shout.

Try B10. in Livermore Falls, ME. Nice grass, 2200". Campers welcome. Also don't miss our annual Fly-In Aug. 23rd, and 24th. Stay for the weekend.

It ain't Maine but come on out to the Adirondacks (NW instead of N) and we'll show you some grass and a good time.

Re: Flying Maine?

I spend much of my time flying in the North Maine Woods. Skis and floats are the best options for exploring this area as there are few landing strips. This area NW of Mt. Katahdin and over to Moosehead lake has a fair amount of float plane traffic in the summer. Some people monitor 122.85 and some never have turned a radio on.

However there are good grass strips to explore in Aroostook County. The strip at Fish River Falls (near Ft. Kent) is great and there are hiking trails to the water fall. Mars Hill also has a grass strip on the edge of town. This one is 1600' with a potato field on one end and tall pines on the other. Camping is allowed at both if you fly in. Here is a picture of my t-craft at the strip at Mars hill in 2011.

Patten Maine has a great grass strip. On this field there is a restaurant called "The Hanger", the food is hot and the prices are good.

Lincoln, Me also has a runway(paved) with a seaplane base and a campground on the river. This is my home airport. For a suggested donation of $10 you can stay at the camp ground have access to bath rooms/showers and I think there are kayaks to use.
Here is a picture of my current bird at the seaplane base.

Feel free to message me to find out more about these strips in Aroostook county, and I would recommend flying into Greenville for the seaplane fly-in. There are many wheel planes that attend and just as much happens at the airport as does at the waterfront.

Re: Flying Maine?

OK... A new summer and time to pick this thread up again.

I have the 29's on so Im gonna start exploring the North Woods in earnest. Anyone interested in getting lost and finding some off the beaten path strips?

I can find the grass stuff on the sectionals... but im looking for some local knowledge about some out-there-jems. I'll bring the beer if you want to share some local knowledge. I'd also love to meet some of the N.E. guys up north so whaddya say? Anybody?

Re: Flying Maine?

ME08 is a great stop. There is a cool uncharted little strip just north of ME22 that can be pretty interesting. We'll
hit the island, and drop into some other good spots too. Let's pick a weekend, or make a long weekend out of it.

That's curious. There's also 08ME in Maine where I bought my 170B. Nice strip, but no services or amenities.

Sweet!

And a nice welcome to you Rene! Glad you finally made it over here to BCP.

Rene (who usually hangs out over on SC.org but I've been pestering him to share over here as well) has a really nice Supercruiser on biggies. Good stick. You will find a great community over here....

Winds are forecast to be up this weekend. But if they're wrong, I plan on heading north to check out some grass strips.

All,

Picking up this thread again. Anyone been into Fish River Falls recently? Who owns that land? I'm happy to talk offline for some gouge.

Thanks.

ME08 is a great place for camping and Fly Fishing. Was up there a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. Beautiful strip camp sites right on the river.
