ForeFlight Connectivity with Garmin Avionics

I do believe this is a game changer. Connectivity between the premier aviation app software company and the premier aviation avionics hardware company. Say goodbye to Garmin Pilot I imagine. Garmin’s core business is hardware, not app-ware. This increases Garmin’s hardware sales and solidifies Foreflight as the leader in aviation apps.

Combine this with the upcoming Foreflight Web which will allow us to do all our flight planning from our laptop, then send it to Foreflight on our iPad, and well, pretty cool stuff.

Guys, as bad as Garmin Pilot's usability is, and it sucks, it has features that Foreflight doesn't, and features I truly like. I've asked Foreflight to incorporate them. If you are a Garmin Pilot user like me please do the same. Things get added to Foreflight based on the number of user requests.

It might be a while yet before Garmin Pilot disappears but I think it will. There is no reason for it not to. It's UI (User Interface) doesn't even match Garmin's current products. And oh, it's not written by Garmin, but rather outsourced to a third party. No reason now for Garmin not to drop it and apply the money to their core projects.

Now Foreflight needs to reciprocate and allow GDL 39 connectivity...

Re: ForeFlight Connectivity with Garmin Avionics

Although I agree Foreflight is better than Garmin Pilot, it still has one shortcoming that I am not willing to overlook- there is no foreflight on Andriod. My dislike of all things Apple (and I've tried to like them plus have an iPad with Foreflight paid for by work) far outweighs Foreflight's edge over Garmin Pilot in my book. I use Garmin Pilot when I'm flying for fun.

I have stayed away from the apple cool aid. I love Naviator app on my Samsung tab. I will get an I-Pad when they come free with the purchase of a Prius.

I see the big fish watching the little fish getting bigger. The big fish doesn't have a good reputation as far as selling it's updates at a reasonable price and forcing it's hardware into obsolescence. The little fish is growing larger still on the same diet, Hopefully the big fish doesn't eat up the growing smaller fish and continue on with its present way of survival.

For the GA pilot ForeFlight has been an invaluable tool, in combination with a Garmin unit there isn't a place you can't safely navigate to.
I shudder to think of what the corporate world can do to the little fish in this case. Be careful for what you wish for.

Re: ForeFlight Connectivity with Garmin Avionics

I have a Garmin GTN750 in my Husky, the airplane came with it, I would not have ordered it if I had a choice, I think it is a great unit for IFR but the base map for VFR flying is not that great. My desire would be able to have ForeFlight displayed on the 750, that would be fantastic since I do not have room for an iPad in the front seat of the Husky. My wife has iPad mounted in the overhead crossbar area in the back seat and it works great, she has all the fantastic ForeFlight features at her finger tips. Garmin makes ok hardware but their expensive updates and software issues could be improved upon.

It looks like the Garmin Pilot app is produced by Digital Cyclone, which according to their webpage was acquired by Garmin in 2007:

"Founded in 1998, Digital Cyclone® has established itself as a leader in providing personalized weather intelligence for wireless devices. In January of 2007, Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN) acquired provider Digital Cyclone Inc. in an effort to broaden the LBS product offerings and expands capability in the area of wireless application development, marketing, and distribution. DCI has been an early mover in the emerging location based services market offering weather solutions for consumers, outdoor enthusiasts, and pilots on a subscription based model that are delivered to customers in partnership with top national wireless carriers as well as regional carriers. The company is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota and operates as an independent subsidiary of Garmin Ltd."

I like the Garmin app and would hate to see it go away. I have nothing against Foreflight and would happily use it, but competition is always a good thing. Its also a good thing to have solid app options for Android.

Didn't know they were purchased by Garmin, but the fact that they remain an independent subsidiary speaks volumes.

Yes, the GTN 750 is an absolute game changer for IFR work. It really has no other use.
