Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

A couple posts up. iPad mini, first generation, 64 gb. Makes sense, but surprising too...meaning Apple should make it known when a new iOS system is coming out. Of course maybe they did...it's not like I'm a big tech junky and follow that stuff.

Be patient--I'll let everyone know what FF tells me as soon as they answer, which I'm betting will be within the next day or so.

That's exactly the issue. The full package FLY-Q EFB by Seattle Avionics , Foreflight, and Wing-X all require iOS, and the Garmin Pilot Android versions in the past were not as fully capable as their iOS brethren. As was pointed out above, not only are CPUs being taxed, but available storage memory as well. First generation iPads and 16GB do not cut it anymore, and 32GB seems marginal. 64GB now seems the new normal and 128GB means you are the Man..or Woman.

I'd say those are the four primary players, and three require that you drink the Apple KoolAid. I have also been looking at the latest and greatest Android Samsung Tab S3 that is supposed to be coming out soon. It features removable SD cards that can provide gobs of storage, although some apps can only run programs stored on onboard memory. Given the four primary players, choosing Android for aviation applications means that I would have to bite into the Garmin apple. And then there is that other issue of what avionics work and share/ talk with what systems. Oh brother.

And so I sit....and read great threads like this one.... it's complicated

Image

I really like flightpln go. I use it on my Samsung phone as a backup to my 796. It's the only app besides FF that has Canadian sectionals. Plus it's free, and I don't have to drink the apple kool-aid.

In my iDevices I did what you did and IOS 10 was suggested. I was curious and googled IOS 10 devices and it looks like your mini should be supported. So I have no explanation for what you're seeing. Maybe plug it into your computer and try using iTunes?

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

From Foreflight this morning, in response to my questions:

The iPad Mini 1 can be updated to iOS 10 and I would recommend updating it as ForeFlight 8.1 is fully compatible with iOS 10 and higher. That being said only iOS 9.2 and higher is required for ForeFlight 8.0 and higher so it's really up to you.

Oddly, a few days ago when I checked my Mini, it told me that iOS 10 was available. This morning, it says my software, which is 9.3.5, is up to date. So we're in the same boat on updating, but when/if I figure out how to do the update to iOS 10, I'll advise. However, based on the FF comment, it's not a critical thing to get done right away.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Yeah I thought I had seen it pushed through last week but decided to wait because FF recommended letting them test it first. I had a trip coming up and didn't want to have FF screwed up. Now it's not available. Interesting!

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Not sure exactly when you saw those messages saying you were "up to date", but Apple pulled the iOS 10 upgrade for a while, to correct some issues with "bricking" certain devices. Somehow it "never came up" during the beta testing... Anyway, it might show back up, so check back again...

Thanks. I'll do that. That screen shot was from yesterday. I just checked about 30 minutes ago and it said the same thing.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Actually, I didn't do anything, but reading the latest posts on this thread, I checked my IPhone, and now it says 10 is available. But, checked it yesterday and it said I was up to date with 9.xxx

Interesting. I'm leaving it alone for the moment. Need to find out how big a storage hog 10 is before I go there. Phone doesn't have all that much storage.

Actually that says modem (not modern) firmware--two different things. The version I have (line 7) is 9.3.5, which refers to the current iOS of the device. which coincides with the page under General, Software Update, which also says iOS 9.3.5 with the message "Your software is up to date." Like I said, that page a few days ago said that iOS 10 was available for download.

Conversely, my iPhone 5s, which also currently has iOS 9.3.5, still says under General, Software Update, that iOS 10 is available for download.

I read somewhere while trying to find out about this that the next "available for download" message will be sent out by Apple on October 4th. So there's no reason to get too wound up about it now.

Upgrading to new releases rarely has benefits that outweigh the risks of running into a compatibility issue with your apps. If the device and its apps' functionality are important to me, I will wait until all the other eager suckers have upgraded.

That's why it's best to at least wait until the app provider has OK'd the new release. I know people who upgrade as soon as the new release comes out, and they haven't had any problems, but I'd much rather the experts do their due diligence, since I'm not smart enough to do the due diligence myself.

In this case, so far as I know, all the aviation app providers have given the OK to iOS 10, but there's still no need to rush to update any device. While Apple uses a lot of hyperbole to describe iOS 10, if you actually read what they're saying, it's better but not quite the equivalent of the second coming, and everything that worked before on an older iOS will still work on that iOS.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Chances are the ipad 1 won't die until a future FF software release, but it's time to upgrade. If you don't want to buy new, just get a cheap-o ipad 4 or later to dedicate to the airplane. It's the cost of an hour or two of flight time.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Tonight, I checked my IPhone, and it says IOS 10 is available for download.

Checked my IPad Mini, and it says I have 9.3.5 and am up to date. The mini is a 2, I think.

But, the iOS 10 upgrade says it's a 1.1 gig download. My phone only has 1.9 gig available. I read through all the shit that 10 supposedly does for you, and only one of them I MIGHT use...maybe. All the rest of that crap seems like toys for tots.

Think I'll stick with 9.3.5

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

But remember, the download file is compressed, gets expanded, then installed, and when complete, the downloaded (compressed) file and the expanded files are removed. The end result is NOT a 1.1 GB larger system image... It just needs that space while downloading / installing. Yes, iOS 10 is a bit larger, but not 1.1 GB worth...

And, once you've installed iOS 10, you will be able to delete many of the Apple apps that come standard with the OS, but that you personally may never use. For instance, I don't have an iWatch, so I can now delete that app and gain back even more space. There are many more as well... (Edit: And if you ever DO decide you want that app back, you can re-install from the App Store.)

Do what you want, but I wanted you to know the facts before making the decision to remain back-level.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Talked to a friend today who loaded 10 on her phone, and it tanked. Went to Verizon, and they said go talk to Apple. It's a paperweight now.

How do you get rid of unwanted IOS apps? I've never figured that out.....amongst the many things I haven't figured out.....there are several on this phone that are useless and I'd like the space.

Re: ForeFlight ending support for older devices

Place, and loiter, a digit lightly on any app. All will start shaking and ones that can be deleted will have an "x" appear on the icon. Touch the "x" and the app is deleted. If you have apps organized into folders to delete those you'll need to go into the folder first.
