Foreflight Pro has had the overlayed approach plate feature for awhile, so that's not news. The "news" from IR users standpoint is that some folks prefer Jepp plates and charts to NACO plates and charts, and now they can have them as part of their FF subscription.
I stopped using Jepp plates and charts long before anyone had EFBs, because the government NACO products were much less expensive. When I was in the partnership and we were splitting the Jepp costs, it wasn't so bad, but when I left the partnership, I had to cut expenses to afford the same coverage. Although the format is a bit different, I'm not convinced that Jepp provides any benefit over NACO charts, for my kind of IR flying in my 115 knot hot rod. If on the other hand, I were flying a jet, maybe I'd feel differently--maybe.
Now that Garmin offers the navigation subscriptions for their boxes at a price point much below Jepp's, it was a no-brainer for me to switch. For the same $ that I used to pay to get full USA coverage of nav only from Jepp, I now have full North American coverage of both nav and obstacle/terrain for my 430W. Not that I'm likely to use all that, and maybe I'll cut it back next renewal, but for the moment it's kind of cool to have all that available--wow factor if you will.
The only additional cost was for the Garmin reader, because the Jepp reader doesn't work with Garmin's nav data set up. But the same reader works for both Garmin nav and obstacle/terrain. One other feature that I didn't anticipate is that if I carry my reader with me, I can use any Windows computer, like at a library for instance, to update my data cards, because it's easy to get onto the Garmin update site. Getting onto the Jeppesen update site was a pain in the neck, because of their unique password requirements compared to Garmin's.
As long as FF doesn't degrade in some fashion due to this partnership with Jeppesen, I don't see it as a particular positive or negative for most users, but it will be nice for those who feel more comfortable with Jepp plates and charts.
