Forum/social site features that are important to you

The planning and execution for BCP 4.0 is underway, due in no small part to the help of fellow Bearhawk builder @akschu here on BCP.

I'm seriously considering jumping ship from PHPBB3, the forum software we use here. Despite there being a newer version, it still is antiquated and lacking some popular social media features like:

- user mentions
- likes
- notifications for both of the previous features.
- easy image posting and formatting
- better mobile support
- better login session management

As fellow netizens, I'm curious what other features you've found valuable in your journey around the Internet's other forums.

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

Those are my most appreciated features there in your list. Tapatalk has made it pretty easy to deal with images, but mainly because they host the images, not you, and the workflow is pretty straightforward.

How do you envision making image contribution more streamlined?

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

Easier transfer of images from my computer to the site would be my request. I used to use Photobucket, which was ultra-easy to place images on any forum, but now all the images I put on that are only available if I pay an outrageous annual fee to them. I would have been happy to pay a small annual fee, but not what they asked.

Otherwise, I like "like" buttons (and for that matter, "don't like" buttons), and I also like the option of being notified if a thread that I'm following has new comments.

I would like a notification that I've received a private message. I don't look at the site every day, and often enough I forget to look at the header that tells me there's a private message. So getting an email that there is one would be nice.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Otherwise, just keep up doing the great work that you do, Z! I think most of us appreciate it, but don't say that often enough.

I read the forums mostly but really appreciate it when you post an article or link on Facebook pointing me at something new. I cannot imagine the amount of "spare" time you have invested here. Thank you.

I'll probably have some feature-related comments soon, but in the meantime - Cary you can do that now. There's a setting in there somewhere to get notified via email for PM's. I get them.

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

I’ll admit, I don’t share nearly as much as I want here because it’s a PITA to post images :(

That and something about the format makes it hard for me to jump to new posts in a thread but I think that’s just me.

Facebook Groups have a good workflow for sharing and general conversation but sucks as a knowledge store or archive.

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

I think you hit on most of them. Image sharing is the only reason I use Tapatalk and is the only way I was able to do my trip report on the fly during my AK trip last year.

Thanks for all the effort!

Posting images! I am (actually lazy but lie to myself and say I'm) too busy to post images 'cause it's a PITA. An easy way to post images would be awesome!

THe supercub site lets you transfer photos onto your post direct from your files--
no intermediate stop in a photos bin.
Or requiring photobucket or whatever.
Sometimes I want to post a photo but going through the extra step(s) doesn't seem worth it.

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

I acknowledge the feedback. Thank you.

Sounds like I'm going to have to enhance my storage to accommodate all the uploading and re-uploading 8)

FWIW, it has never been necessary to use a third party image hosting service to post photos here. I have a load of albums and images stored here. While it's a heavily flawed piece of software, it does work. It even works to upload in a mobile browser.

https://backcountrypilot.org/me/my-phot ... bumid=4984

But no, not as easy as selecting that file deep in your camera folder on your phone and uploading it every time you want to share.

What do you do when you lose or destroy your phone? Or your computer hard drive?

I do get the use case, and that it's fewer steps to just choose the file and upload it to have it automatically embedded.

The ideal solution is to have photos you've already uploaded in the past easily accessible from a new post so you can choose from your own library and drop it right into the post. That's what I'm aiming for.

Really looks like peeps want to post their adventures directly here. Maybe we might should start looking into fuse mounting s3 for the asset store or something like that.

Personally I don't mind phpbb, but dragging pictures straight into this window would be handy.

Software conversions are sooooo much fun!!!!!

I like the live chat. I like the mobile app that FATPNW is using to let others know where you are in real time GPS. Makes meet and greets more likely.

I like the option to view your recent posts. Kind of like the "view recent topics" option we have now, but it only shows the topics you have participated in. Makes it easy to follow threads you are interested in and remember what kind of BS you have been spewing.

You can do that currently, sorry it is not cleaner and more obvious.

I never thought I would say it, but "likes" or these days a range of ubiquitous "reactions" to choose from are actually pretty handy. Better than arguing or commenting, just hit the like or angry face button. The line of indecipherable emoji kinda doesn't get the job done any more :D #-o [-X [-o<

Forum/social site features that are important to you

Compatibility with Tapatalk is most important to me.

Being able to create posts and upload images using the app is really great.

Right now everything on the app works with BCP except for the ability to use Tapatalk to host my images and place them in a post.

I have to compose my message with pictures in another forum, and then copy and paste everything over to BCP.

The option to insert images hosted by Tapatalk is missing from BCP when using the app.

Re: Forum/social site features that are important to you

Great site. Hard to offer many suggestions.

One typical use case for me is to "view unread posts"....quickly scan and read any of interest...then want to "mark all as read".

On Tapatalk, this is straightforward. On the website, I can't seem to figure out how to "mark all as read" (I easily can find the Unread posts view).

Perhaps it is a DFU error but this is an important feature to me (keeps me going back to Tapatalk to clear unread posts).

Thanks ZZZ for all of the effort.
