FS: Catto Prop

Now that my 170 will now be hiding a Lycoming 0-360 under the hood I have a Catto seaplane prop for sale off the Conti 0-300.

The sale could additionally include: crush plate, full spinner assembly and a padded prop cover.

Any idea if this can also be mounted on the C-145? Thanks!

Re: FS: Catto Prop

Yes; that's what I had it on, not sure why Catto annotated the hub as 0-300.

Re: FS: Catto Prop

That’s cool, and weird for Catto. Did you do an STC or 337? What are you asking for the whole kit? If you want, send a pm to me. Thanks, Chris

Re: FS: Catto Prop

My 170 flies on an Canadian Owner Maintenance (OM) C of A so no STC required and a 337 isn't recognized by Transport Canada as a certification document. I'll PM you and we can continue the conversation there if your still interested.

Re: FS: Catto Prop

I know a few guys running Catto props on certified airplanes, one of them is an IA.
One of the airplanes is a C170, the other two are Luscombe 8A's.
Page 7 of the C170 TCDS lists "Sensenich 73BR-50 or any other fixed pitch wood"
Page 10 of the Luscombe 8A TCDS says "propeller-wood (fixed or adjustable pitch".
He signed them off as legal, his position is that the Catto is a "wood prop with a protective covering".
Your opinion (and mine) might vary.

That portion of the C170 TCDS actually says........”0550162
(b) Sensenich 73BR-50 or any other fixed pitch wood Static r.p.m. at max. permissible throttle setting:
Not over 2320, not under 2220
No additional tolerance permitted
Diameter: Not over 74 in., not under 71.5 in.
(Not eligible on seaplane. Not eligible for
new installations on Continental C-145-2
engines having undampered crankshafts aNfotevrember 1, 1951) Propeller spinner, dwg. No. 0550102-3”.

As cool as this propeller would be to have, the only way to get it approved on a certified airplane is through a DER.

I checked with the IA I mentioned, turns out I misspoke.
Here is the body of the email he sent me:

"The 170 is Certified under CAR3 and there is no legal way to install a non-certified prop on any CAR3 aircraft. All wood propellers for CAR3 need a Type Certificate. So when CAR3 planes state in the Data Sheets "any wood propeller" it also means a certified prop. The only possible loop hole would be "owner supplied parts" - but I don't think that would be acceptable. Therefore I am not involved with the installation of the prop on the 170. The story is completely different for CAR4a certified aircraft which precedes CAR3- such as the Luscombe ( still certified as CAR4a August of 1938) and others Certified prior to CAR3. CAR4a specifically states in section 597 that ONLY METAL PROPELLERS have to have Type Certificate and that WOOD Props do not require a type certificate. So I have entered the Catto in the Luscombe on the existing approved data. Based on CAR4a.597 and the TC A-694 Prop section item 6 for Luscombe that states any wood propeller fixed or adjustable. The Catto is simply a coated wood prop - fully craved of maple and a coating of up to .100" of fiber- much like AeroMatic and Flotrop and BeachRoby props of that era which are no longer available."
