The plane I'm looking at is the same way. I'm having a hard time with the idea that the useful load in the potential new plane is almost equal to the total gross weight of my Luscombe  I can't wait to do something dumb like fill it up with kayak gear and head for Loon Creek just because I can.

I feel for ya, Rob. One day I'm dead certain I need to get a 185, then the next day I've talked myself into a 180, then the day after that I'm positive I need to upgrade the engine in my 170B. Learning a heap about airframes and powerplants and props, at least!

You need to implement "like" buttons.

Start trying to pry your way into some stick time in the type of plane you want to upgrade to. I'm pretty blessed with lots of friends with lots of different types of planes that allow me to fly them, and some pretty cool types to boot.
Truth is, it's always nice to get back in the 170, partially cause it fits like a well broke in glove, but it's just so nice and light on the controls, simple, inexpensive (as far as airplanes go) and on and on...... Remember, most of them do many things well, but usually don't do any specific thing great!
I was excited to see what you guy's were gunna upgrade into though.
Good luck.
By the way, I received your package in the mail the other day.
Thanks,
Tom

Glad you got the package, Tom.

I've heard more than a few people regret selling there 170s, I don't want that to happen to me. Keeping the 170 won't cost us anything since it is completely paid for. That and the fact I've put bout 10k into modifications for it that i will never get back help in the decision to keep it. It's still a really great plane that we will still have a lot of fun flying. We still want to get another plane with more useful load and that's better suited for long cross country flights but is still capable in the backcountry (who doesn't want two airplanes anyways :D ). I have something I'm working on right now but the timing just might not work out. I won't say what it is so I don't turn anyone else onto the deal. I'll give you a hint though... with full tanks it will still haul over 1000lbs :D .

I was lucky enough to be able to buy out my dad's partner in the 1953 170B I got my ticket in only to have my dad want to sell it.He hated all the AD's (the only one I remember was the carb float issue)so we started building a Murphy Rebel, that didn't get far as day to day stuff just seems to get in the way. I really missed the 170 so we ended up buying a 1960 150 straight tail, awesome fun little honda civic of airplanes. we now have a 1958 180 and all I can say is I can't believe how capable this aircraft is. :D .Soo I think you may want to do what Bigrenna did,buy a 180 and put all your goodies on it,or wait a few weeks until his airplane is done and buy that one.I 'm thinking he might be ready for a 195 project, more room for MEK fumes. Just kidding Greg can't wait to see that awesome machine this summer.

Move closer to Sac, sell the plane, buy a 180, join our group, then you will be able to fly a bunch of shit! And I will get to fly a 180 :D

No but seriously, join our group.

Kidding (sort of).

Good luck with whatever you guys decide.

Hey, we need a West Circuit day soon! Or even a Sierra N/S Circuit. Any circuit!

I hope not.

Just because I am still learning to fly that plane and have not come to grips with the thought of selling my TCraft - the new owner is getting attached to Emmet's former ride.

I had the Sportsman STOL kit put on in April of last year. The install was completed in 2 weekends and it cost me $1000. That price is not very typical however.

Don't forget the price of the kit plus shipping!

I figured he was just asking the cost of installation. Anyone can go on Stene's site and see that the kit is $1,995.

Thanks...I was just wondering bout labor and how long it took. I am actively shopping for a C-170B and if I get one without the kit, I am going to put it on.

This is from Stene Aviations website: What is the average installation time? For an individual who has not installed the kit before the installation takes 40-50hours without paint. Experienced installers on average take 30-40hours.

"All the AD's" ? Of course, being a cerificated airplane, the C170 is subject to AD's, but I owned a ragwing 170 for many years and abou the only recurring AD's I remember were for the fuel pump screen (specific to the 1948 ragwing model) and for the seat tracks. There were quite a few one-time AD's for both the engine and the airframe but nothing too onerous as i recall. Lots of them were simple, like disconnecting or fusing the wiring to the cigar lighter.
