Fuel flow sensor installation

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Fuel flow sensor installation

Thinking of adding a fuel flow to my Citabria. Gravity, so gold cube FT-90. Gascolater outlet is 3/8 NPT to a -8 hose. Cube is 1/4" NPT at both ends. Easiest would be to mount to gascolator before the hose to the carb. EI doesn't like that, preferring it be suspended between a couple of flexible hoses. Somebody already done this that can suggest the plumbing?

(M6RV6, will flow test before flight in accordance with good airworthiness standard: 160hp/12 x 150%, 20 gal/hr minimum)
Update: covered by STC, no flow test required, ACA has the drawings for the install showing all the plumbing.

Re: Fuel flow sensor installation

Not sure what engine you have, but check fuel flow for pipe diameter!! Might not flow enough with the restriction??

Worth noting, our recommendation of installing the transducer with two flexible lines is for vibration protection. We never want to see, nor would we advocate installing our transducers with a hard fuel line. Considerations should be taken to make sure the transducer is installed after any and all fuel pumps and the transducer is mounted as horizontally as possible with the wires facing up, but ease of installation should take precedence.

Had my A&P install the FP-50L in my '65 7ECA per EI's instructions, and it works beautifully. Always within a gallon at refill. With an O-200 engine, those 39 gallon tanks last a long time!

Re: Fuel flow sensor installation

I have the EI FP5L fuel computer, which I've had for about 10-11 years. I did have a failure of the transducer a few years ago, so that's been replaced. But it is extremely accurate, once the correct "K factor" is plugged in. That's done by trial and error, although I think it only took me about 3-4 fill-ups to get it very close. The way mine is adjusted, it always take a little less gas than the FP5L says it should, which is better than the other way around.

The single most disappointing thing about the FP5L isn't EI's fault. With it hooked to the 430W, I can get an instantaneous reading of my mpg, and seeing 13.4 mpg isn't pleasant! :)

Change your K-Factor until your MPG reads something more pleasant!
