Any reason to keep one of these ? My pacer came with one. It works fine but you cant update the data base . Any reason to keep it? I am using foreflight on a mini ipad.
Wanting to sell off the Garmin and a Hooker Shoulder harness set . Will be listing both I'm sure in the for sale section but thought I would ask if they are still used

No need unless you want an NMEA input for fuel flow or G5

I think they are great GPS units. Why can't you update the database?

You might try to find a Xaon to detect aircraft and display on 396. Even though I have ABSB IN/OUT displayed on WingX on an iPad Pro, the Xaon is sometimes better at detecting low flyers.

But are there any advantages using this over foreflight ?
I’m not a big fan of the smaller screened gps like this and the 430
650 and newer yes but O have a hard time reading the graphics on these old units and would like to sell it.
Will be listed in classifieds for best offer pretty sure soon

I like having a GPS in the plane to draw a quick magenta line or get frequencies without having an ipad out with all its extras. In my mind and use they serve two different roles. I loved having a 496 panel mounted in my 180. Bought the plane thinking I'd throw it out but I used it every flight outside of my immediate area. Reduced the times you need to pull out an ipad by a ton. That being said, it is a dated unit for sure.

I fly a plane with a 796 for work and instruct in one with a 660. If I buy another plane and go the vfr GPS route, I'd go 660. It's very impressive and I like the smaller form factor while maintaining a large screen. Terrain, VFR charts, airport information, you name it, it has it. Also only $750..

I use both and like the redundancy.

I had a 396 in my 170 for years and regret letting it go with the plane.

if you ever consider Sirius XM Weather, the 396 came with the antenna. buy a 660 or any of the other newer Garmin devices, and you'll be paying several hundred dollars just for the XM antenna or receiver.

I really liked the 396, frankly. Screen is a bit small, but it met all my needs for a long time.
