Garmin's New Pilot GPS Watch

Garmin has come out with a GPS watch for pilots. Has a complete world wide airport database, itty bitty maps and a kind of HSI all on your wrist. I'm not running out to get one, but it looks like a clever bit of kit if you have $500 burring a hole in your pocket. A bud of mine is getting one, so I'll see it hands on soon.

Too rich for my blood but it is a cool watch. Nice that it can control the new garmin VIRB HD cameras. Wonder if they charge for updates?

Neat idea, although definitely a bit of a gimmick. I guess it's probably the cheapest way into Garmin GPS ownership :)

Re: Garmin's New Pilot GPS Watch

I cannot imagine Garmin not charging for aviation updates in that watch. My car GPS came with a "lifetime subscription" to updates, but it doesn't have "airplane" written on it.

Because GXY and my house are 30+ miles and about 45 minutes apart, I thought it would be nice to have a spare 430W data card to make it more convenient to update the unit. Yeah, sure--for $349! I had to buy their updater adapter for $195, or the inconvenience would be even worse. So no spare.

No doubt, the big G makes good stuff, but they sure don't give much away.

Re: Garmin's New Pilot GPS Watch

Actually the big price on cards is not a Garmin issue, but Jeppson. The newest Garmins, 6xx/7xx use SD cards. Oh, cheap cards now! Well you have to get a replacement from Jeppson for big bucks. It is formatted in some special way so you cannot use any old SD card. At least no special reader/writer is needed. Good old Jeppson, jamming rolls of expensive paper up my exhaust for years now. Garmin was nice, they gave you two cards with their new units as well, so you could leave one in the unit and take one home to update.
