Glendo,WY Fly-In 9/8/13

I'm headed to a fly in at Glendo WY this Sunday, south of Douglas north of Wheatland. Fun bunch of people, pancakes, balloon popping, flour bombing, spot landing, etc.

You Front Range guys should come on up.

Tom, if you're still in our neck of the woods by then, come see how a 140 horse Rotax performs on an S-7 with slats (I'll give you a hint...it rocks).

Well if I still lived in Cheyenne I would definitely be there! Have fun and take some pictures.

Anybody know how far of a drive from Cody?

Edit: Never mind. It's about 5-6 hours.

Re: Glendo,WY Fly-In 9/8/13

So, this weekend, there was the Hood River, OR., Pinedale Wy., Sheridan Wy., Glendo, and Elko fly in to choose from, and I didn't get to go ANY of them! A persistent low over my area and generally threatening and ominous conditions plus some ill timed crane jobs kept me at home, and I want to complain about it. Plus crane work early Monday morning made possibly getting stuck or delayed somewhere on the way home a bad deal. Making it worse was I was checking up on the WX at these various sites and it looked perfect there, crap :x Just wanted to let you guys know I'm still kicking.

RP, Yes I really did want to see that 130 hp slatted S-7, I'm guessing Bruce stole the motor off of the Outlaw prototype? I know the 7 has flown slatted before, but heard it needed more power to take full advantage of what they did for it.

Seriously though, much better to bitch and moan then regret launching into mountain flying conditions way below my comfort level, in fact that was the good thing, it was never even considered, a no brainer, wasn't going to happen.... and I know how the flying karma works, and I am now due an unexpected window of perfect WX and no work, and then I'll quit bitching.

A few reports from the fly-ins other then Hood River would be great though, from those who made them.

I was all loaded up and sat in the run up area at Jackson Hole for an hour waiting for the airport to go VFR... They were not issuing specials for anyone either... So I went back and sat at the hangar till 11 am and then the clouds opened up completely to make it VFR... Personally I could have safely launched and stayed under the cloud deck till I got into the Hoback canyon and it was clear the rest of the way.............

I really hate being based at a airport that has a tower.....

That condition is exactly why I got my IFR ticket.

Not to rub it in, but...put more than 15 hours on the tach this weekend. Spent two days helping to track down and take care of 9 very tough coyotes that had made quite a dent in the lamb population. Then went to Glendo and had a great time. 13 planes total (a lot for Glendo), and probably 300 folks who showed up just to watch (I love small town Wyoming).

$150 first prize and $50 second prize for the flour bombing contest, same for the balloon popping contest, and a $50 fuel check just for showing up with an airplane! Add to that the free breakfast and free all you could eat barbecue lunch, and the enjoyment of getting to watch the kids swarm the runway after making the toy bombing run for them and dumping out three bags full of toys, and you had the makings of a hell of a weekend. Sorry you guys missed it, but you should definitely keep it in mind for next year.

Sounds like my kind of fly-in Ranch Pilot! Sorry I had to miss this one, but I'd love to make it next year. Thanks for giving us an update.

Re: Glendo,WY Fly-In 9/8/13

It was a lot of fun. Planes included:

C-120
C-185
C-180
C-182 RG
C-177
RV-6 (this guy popped all three of his balloons with an RV!!)
2 J-3s
PA-11
PA-12
PA-22
Rans S-7
Avid Flyer

It was also fun to watch a couple hundred people hang out under the shade trees near the runway from early morning until 2 pm, all content to watch the airplanes fly past without any other entertainment needed. Everything from older folks (with many elderly veterans in attendance) down to little kids. I would imagine this is what fly-ins used to look like, back in the day.

Tip of the hat to the Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics Commission, who provided grant money to the Town of Glendo to pay for the feed, fuel credits, and prizes.

No, but it would allow you to leave the airport area, cancel, and do your Hoback Canyon escape. :)

Had planned on it but couldn't make it. Too hot here at SNY (107F) to do much flying. Maybe next year.
