Re: Headed to Talkeetna..

Hey 29singlespeed, I just got back from Alaska Floats and Skis on Sat. Although I got my float rating more than 30 years ago, I hadn't flown floats for a long time, and wanted to get my feet wet. I had a blast! If you haven't been there, you'll love it. Whether you're flying wheels (bush) or floats, I truly believe it's the best. Tell Don and the guys that Eduardo says hello! Enjoy!!!

Well, originally I was going to fly both floats and wheels for 6 days. I'm in the process of buying of buying a C185 on amphibs and need more float time, so at the end I spent all my time on floats. I waited to do some wheel flying at the end, but the weather didn't cooperate, so I didn't. Still, I had a blast.

One thing I do recommend is, if you have a clear day, do a mountain flight and go to Mt. Denali. It is well worth it. It was one of the most memorable flying experiences of my life! And put a couple of GoPros on the outside of the airplane to show everyone at home. They won't believe how awesome the experience!

Anyway, say hi to the guys!

Re: Headed to Talkeetna..

I have heard great things about that crew.

A word of advice. Have them teach you, and practice, how to beach/dock/ramp/sail the aircraft in as many different ways as possible ie different winds, currents etc.

Flying floats is pretty easy, it is the ground (water?) work where the real learning curve takes place, you have to practice not just have it explained. If you are going to fly floats you will learn this stuff eventually, better to do it with an instructor.

Have a great time!

I hope I get a bunch of different current practice! I also hope I get addicted as much as I think I will.. then have to figure out how to use the rating.

THIS. Dealing with rushing tides, river currents and contradictory winds is a work of art for some pilots and a pain in the ass for the rest of us!

Have fun!

Sounds great to me.. as a river rat (whitewater raft stuff), aspiring sailor and boat person.
