Kid's headset

Hey guys,

Here's my 8 month old son wearing his big sister's hand-me-down Pilot USA PA-1151ACG headset.

He seems pretty happy with it, and is apparently man enough to tolerate the pink color so far! :)

They're kind of pricey for what they are, but they're the best alternative I've found.

My Daughter's 7 now, so she's graduated to full-sized Lightspeed QFRs.

Hi Oregon180-

Are there any special considerations or tips for installing that child seat in the 180?

Thanks for the headset post,

Hi there,

It's a Graco infant seat with a detachable base.

It works really well with the back seat lap belt securing the base. In the car you can also choose to attach the seat without the base, but the seat belts in the 180 weren't long enough for that.

Wish I had more pictures of the installation, but basically he's in the back seat behind me facing backwards, just like in the car.

My wife flew in the other back seat in case the little guy requested "in flight beverage service..." :)

Re: Hearing Protection for Children

Reviving this ancient thread.

It is time for my daughter to get her own headset. We have been using cut down earplugs and earmuffs but I'd like to get her a real headset that she will be able to use for a long time. Any ideas? I thought Lightspeed used to sell a youth set but I checked their website and didn't find anything. I like to idea of using a regular headset with that bandage stuff wrapped around the headband but I worry the large ear cups would get in the way while she is in the carseat.

She is my main copilot so I want to be sure her hearing is protected.

Re: Hearing Protection for Children

My kids started flying with me the week after I got my license in 1973, at ages 7 and 3 respectively. That was before anyone wore headsets, and it was rare that anyone used earplugs. A couple years later, we started using the foam plugs for all of us, and finally I bought my first DC headset in 1979--which I still have. I've lost a bit of hearing, maybe from flying but maybe also just from being older, but neither of the boys has any hearing loss.

To close the loop on the original question I asked, we ended up using those swimmer's ear plugs for our kids. We found that they worked better than the foam ones because it was easier to mash a waxy ball over their ear canal than stuff a piece of foam in it. And they have a decent NRR too.

Now, four years later, we are looking for a youth headset for our daughter. I bought, and returned, the SoftComm "Child Prince". It clamped really tightly on her head, but the head band was plastic so it couldn't be adjusted. I was going to give the US Pilot one a try. I'm hoping the metal band can be tweaked to adjust the clamp force. More importantly, for my daughter at least, is it comes in pink.

Thanks sharing how you solved the original problem. I found three threads about kids headset and this one had the most info which is why I chose to ask my question here.

JR, why are you going with a youth headset rather than an adult with something on the headband to make them fit?
