Heli-coil

Has anyone put in a heli-coil on a cylinder? I have a buggered up thread on one plug (bottom) on a A-65. Tried a thread chaser with no success . Trying do sort out my options. Any info would be useful.

Thanks,

Pete

Re: Heli-coil

If you look closely, you will probably see that it has a helicoil in it from the factory way back in history. Carefully pull that one out by starting at the end and lifting the tip with a dental pick, then grab it with needle nose pilers and screw it out. Replace it with a new one.

Thanks Dale,

Unfortunately it doesn't look like that's the case here. Anyhow, we have scrounged up a tool set and are going to give it a go next week.

Re: Heli-coil

I've done several heli-coils, but my experiences are mainly aluminum heads on auto engines. People have a tendency to over torque spark plugs when installing them, especially in aluminum heads, it will easily ruin the threads.

It's a fairly easy process, just take your time and go slow. I've also used a vacuum held next to the tap to try and keep the shavings from entering the cylinder as I take small turns of the tap. I reverse direction often to try and get a cleaner cut. Clean the threads the best you can before installing the heli-coil. Good luck!!
