Re: HELP! Airframe repair shop recommendations needed.

Another idea is to source new wings that need less/different work.
I have a set of hail damaged 170B wings - same as your 172 wings, that I’d let go for cheap.

Is the electric flap setup easy to put in? Or remove if using other wings on an older bird?

IMHO this was a smart move by the OP.
As Dirty Harry said, a man's got to know his limitations.
Better to hire the work done & learn at the same time,
than maybe blunder ahead without knowing what you're doing & fuck things up.
Bad enough when it's someone's own airplane,
but I've seen it done by an A&P charging someone else for their work.
"Often mistaken, but never uncertain" comes to mind.

I've talked to guys who attended A&P schools where everything seemed oriented toward airliners,
with very little that seemed related to working on GA aircraft.
IMHO serving an apprenticeship instead of (or in addition to) attending a school seems to produce better real-world mechanics.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

Re: HELP! Airframe repair shop recommendations needed.

An update for those of you who care

After taking some advice from some of you and researching more I have decided to take on the job myself. Unfortunately I was not able to find anyone within a reasonable distance that could work with me on the job. I've built some wing stands and am going to do my very best without a jig as one of you suggested. Hopefully I'll have the job finished in about a month. I'll post some updates here as I move along.

Once again, thank you for all of the advice!

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

Re: HELP! Airframe repair shop recommendations needed.

Ive got everything disassembled. Top and bottom inboard skin is off. Spars are out as well as a few damaged ribs. Ive decided to install new flap tracks and flap track track brackets.

I am going to produce the rear spars myself. The spars are made of .032 aluminum but I don't have and specs on it. I am assuming they are 2024-t3 but I cannot confirm that. Do you guys have any recommendations on where I could find that info? The manual says that 2024-t3 can be used for any wing structural repair, but it doesn't say that its a substitute for a whole part like a spar. Any thoughts?

Re: HELP! Airframe repair shop recommendations needed.

You'll probably see a 24-ST marking on the aluminum. That's the old designation for 2024. You're doing a repair, so I'd feel comfy making the parts from 2024 as called out in the manual.

I applaud your decision to fix it yourself, but why not buy the spar channel?
