Here's one for the 172/175 guys

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Here's one for the 172/175 guys

As we know, when you convert the 175 to a tailwheel, the tail ends up a little light. Some add dead wt. But, I heard the other day that some 172's had a horizontal stabilizer that was wider, maybe 4"s per side???? This could be a big help if the attach points were the same on the 175 as the 172. Anybody ever hear of this, or know about it, done it????

Thanks Gary

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Hey Monte
Will the '63 172 horizontal/elevator bolt on to the '58-59 175? Was '63 the only year that would work? Missed ya at Marble this year.
Hope you and Shiela had a good Christmas.

Re: Here's one for the 172/175 guys

I just checked my parts book, (model 172 and 175, 1962 and earlier) page 32 and 33 show the horizontal stab, and it only shows 2 part no.'s for complete stabilizors. part no 0532001-200 fits 172's 1956-1960 and 175's 1959-1960, part no. 0532001-201 fits 172's and 175's 1960-1962. the only different parts on these 2 stabs is the tip in front of the elevator counterweight. an online parts manual for 1963-1975 models shows a stab part no 0532001-2002 that fits 1963-1973 172's, this appears the be nearly identical to the earlier stab except it is extended about 2 inches on each tip for a different elevator hinge and counterweight. looking at the drawings it will probabally fit the tailcone, but will also require the 1963 or newer evelator to go with it. good luck getting the FAA to approve it.

You could do it with a new fiberglass tip on the stabilizer, and matching tips on the elevator. Still be a fairly big FAA project being primary control. Maybe after the current STC upgrade is finished I can look into it.

My P172D's horizontal tail is a little larger than a regular 172. I haven't measured it, but I believe it's both wider and has a deeper chord. I was parked only 2 airplanes east of you at Marble--maybe you noticed. Image P172Ds are on the same type certificate as the 175 and XP, but there are all sorts of differences model to model.
