Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

Does anyone know when GoPro will have the remote available. I get a killer deal on the GoPro . like 50% off, but I need a remote. Benefits of being a ski instructor. Drift doesn't seem to support PSIA with Pro Buy discounts.

I heard they are working on it or may even be coming out very soon (this has been a while ago, so they might be out now :-k ).

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

You might want to PM AKtahoe1, I know he uses the GoPro. From what I hear, the adhesive strips work pretty good. As for mounts go, be creative and try to show as much as possible. The more you feel like you're there, the better it is. Sometimes just shooting straight out through the prop is a good way to start too.

MtCoyote, you can get the Drift HD170 Stealth for 50% off MSRP as well.

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

I use a strut mount for a Stealth HD. There is a mount provided with the unit that has two slots that will fit on a belt or strap. I took some 'flat' vinyl hose, wrapped it once around the right strut on my 182 just below the upper fairing for cushion, and used a 4" stainless hose clamp to thread through the belt slots on the belt mount. The clamp is lightly tightened.

The cam clicks on and off the belt mount in a moment, and the extra leash gets tied on right next to it. It is aimed to just barely avoid the prop arc, so there are no prop artifacts. I'm sure you could use your imagination to come up with something similar in a few minutes.

For my drift mount, I found a metal tri-pod at Radio Shack that could be disassembled.
I drilled a hole in a spare inspection cover, took the head off the tri-pod and mounted it to the cover.
Put it anywhere you have an inspection cover.
I think this is the one I used.

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

Since we are always talking legal on here, what is really legal in terms of cameras on the wings, fuselage, etc.? Does anyone really know? I called our local Fsdo and all they wanted to discuss was inside the cabin and that they were ok. When talking about mounts on the outside the topic was diverted to external load this and STC that.

We see hundreds of planes with cameras on them. Certainly someone has had a run in with an inspector on this. Anyone?

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

Ram Mounts has a kit for the strut. I got it but am just getting ready to give it a try now that I have a HD Drift. Looks like it should work well though. Instead of hose clamps, I'm going to use some of those ski straps that you see in Zane's pic above...just for ease of getting it on and off. I also will use some parachute cord for an "oops!" safety catch so I don't loose my camera! I'll post some pics when I get a chance to get out and play with it this week.

Perfect timing, Santa brought me one for Christmas. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to use the thing.

Where do you rent porn actresses?

oops, I posted the wrong tri-pod.
This is the one I used. Everthing you need except for the spare inspection cover and a drill.

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

I know several pilots that use the Go Pro suction cup mount - under the wing, on top of the fin, in the cabin, etc. Pretty sure they just stick it on, make sure it's firmly mounted and go, although I think I have heard one pilot did lose their Go Pro. Great reason for a tether. I have a Drift Stealth (that's already busted) and have been thinking about getting a Go Pro soon. The suction cup mount is quick to put on, move to another POV, and remove when done.

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

If the three cameras, GoPro, Drift, and Contour were the same price, which would you buy? The drift has the advantage of the remote, but GoPro will soon have a blue tooth remote. How does that work?

I guess what I am asking is, who has the best quality and features?

Re: Hero 2 camera mounts recommendations

For airplane use I bought a RAM strut mount kit from PilotMall and then found out Northern Lights Avionics has them in stock, so I bought a second kit from them. Simple to install/remove and very effective. The video demonstrates it well. I also have a couple of round tube mounts (also RAM) that work for Cub main gear or Cessna tail springs.

Drift 170s are on sale everywhere. Here's why. The new one's smaller and has 4x digital zoom. They change them faster than you can buy them.
