Wish I had taken pictures but I just did not. Been grabbing them all for FB all day. Thea above are just a few of the hundreds appearing.

Thanks to all of those that participated, volunteered, donated and flew safe! It was a really great time.

Rough count was around 200 aircraft, couple hundred RVs and Campers and over 400 people. 3 bent airplanes. (1 in the wind storm, 2 bad landings) All were safe

High Sierra Fly-in Photo thread 2017

G44 wrote:WOW! Looks like a fun time! How was the wx?

Thursday night into Friday morning we had a legitimate wind and rain event. Wind between 55-75mph, rain .5-1".

A J-3 Cub pulled out the Claw and went cartwheeling about a 1/2 mile and hit 2 other planes. At about 2am guys were out in an absolute down pour pounding tie downs back in. Some vehicles were positioned to block the wind and tie planes to.

I'll tell you, in the morning we had MUD!! bad mud. The type you take 4 steps in and your shoes weigh 5 pounds each. It was sunny and beautiful despite the challenges. All the mountains had a beautiful layer snow. Except for the worst areas the lake bed dried out pretty good Friday. It was cold at night but super pleasant from 9-6. As soon as the sun went down it cooled off.

I have to say Kevin is a great promoter. I am not a fan of where the HSF is headed. Except for OSH I don't care for mega flyin's. I like it much more when it was 50-75 maybe even 80. Most everyone knew each other. The HSF is now come one come all. Got an RV fine come. Got a OHV fine come. Not a pilot, want to light off M80s at 1am, fine come. Want to ride your loud piped side by side at 2:30am fine come. The bond fire is so big you can't find your friends. The live music was great, the beer garden was great, the fire works was great, BUT IMO I'll trade all that and go back to the flyin from BCP and Kevin's airplane buddies who aren't here on BCP. But like BCP is Zane's domain and he sets the protocol, The HSF is Kevin's domain and he sets the protocol.
Cheers...Rob

Re: High Sierra Fly-in Photo thread 2017

I only have a few phone pictures so the quality isn't great.

Arrived on Wednesday from Minden and set up on a little south west from the main area. A perfect day for flying in.
Image

Thursday the weather turned bad as the storm rolled in all day. Alex's Husky weathered the storm but Alex had a rough night in the tent. Rod, Hunter (the Caveman Ranch boys) and Rob had a nice high spot so they stayed dry. In the background is the cub in better times.
Image

Friday morning we woke up to a beautiful day.

I made the mistake of leaving my master on so of course the battery went dead. As soon as I removed the cowling people came by offering help. Thanks to everyones help we got the plane jump started and back in the air.

The rest of the week was perfect flying weather. The STOL drags were exciting. I stayed an extra night and I am glad I did. Got to spend the evening with Alex, Rod, Hunter and Rob around the campfire. Rod cooked up enough food for everyone and the boys from Oregon came over with lots of stories and jokes

Met some wonderful people and had a great time!

Thanks Kevin and everyone else for putting on a great event.

Steve

Here’s my photos from the fly-in. We had a great time as always!

Flying back to Deadcow at 13,500 over the Sierras with a kickin tail wind. I saw level flight ground speeds in excess of 200mph.

On the ground the wind was really picking up, no way I was going to set up a tent so I slept in the plane.

My fly-ties barely held on over night

The surrounding mountains got a fresh dusting of snow

The best part I enjoyed , at least after the desert's version of Hurricane Katrina, was that sleeping in past 7am wasn't an option. The guy in a red wagon was certainly a motivated fellow, He had to have crawled out of the sack at 6 to scrape the ice off his windshield.. at least, warm up the engine, then commence to his version of Reveille by buzzing over the camp line at 50' with the power and prop to the wall. Let's just say it was amusing and somewhat entertaining.

Wasn't that Rob from a few post above that did that - there were a few people that were really looking forward to thanking him.

Re: High Sierra Fly-in Photo thread 2017

I'm glad you all had fun--pix look great (other than the storm issues).

Curious how a Cub broke loose, unless it wasn't tied at all 3 points. I'm not suggesting that The Claw is perfect, but mine (which I've had for 13 years) have held in some really awful winds, as long as the airplane's tires are chocked and the wings and tail are all tied snug to them. Ideas? I'd not like to be responsible for anyone else's airplane getting dinged, and I sure don't want mine to get dinged.

Great to meet you Rob, finally.

I can't speak to this incident, but I see a lot of planes improperly tied with The Claw system. The ropes must be vertical and taught in order to get the maximum strength. If the ropes are pulling at an angle and/or slack, this will dramatically reduce the strength of the design.

Notice in this video the system fails at a very low pull force. Link
