High Sierra Logistics

Help: I'm headed to the High Sierra this year, but I work as a consultant and need to take jobs as they pop up. One just appeared that requires me to be in San Diego on 10/16-17. My current plan is to fly from Washington State to Reno and find a hangar to leave my loaded plane in while I head to SoCal for work. I'd then fly back to Reno commercially, pick up my plane and fly it to Dead Cow - better late than never. Any suggestions on where I could hangar a Maule full of camping gear for 2 nights?

Re: High Sierra Logistics

The glitch is that I have to catch a commercial flight from Reno to San Diego. I don't want to complicate this more by leaving my plane at another airport and then having to figure out how to get to Reno and back. It's a bit of a bind...

Re: High Sierra Logistics

Atlantic at KRNO? Do they offer transient hangar space?

I just looked at their reviews on ForeFlight. Seemed to get good reviews. I was there several years ago during the air races and was quite happy with them.

If you can’t get it in a hangar, why not leave it tied down outside? It’s reasonably secure at KRNO. Scheduled flights = enhanced security. You’re going to leave it outside at High Sierra anyway.

Re: High Sierra Logistics

I've talked to Atlantic at KRNO and they believe they can help, but can't guarantee anything. They're also $100/night for transient hangar space. Ouch. I'm still hoping that something more certain, and less expensive pops up. I'm hoping, but not holding my breath. I know the ramp is probably OK, but I'll have all of my gear in the plane and the observer doors on a Maule leave it all on display for every ramp rat. That gear represents an investment it would be hard to replace. I guess I'm just a nervous Nellie. I always hope for the best, but try and make plans that will help avoid the worst scenario. I've even considered making my reservation at Dead Cow available to others and just concentrate on the work that has come my way. The problem is that I keep working so I can afford this flying hobby of mine. If I give up flying for the work then my priorities are just upside down. Woe is me...

Re: High Sierra Logistics

I used a Signature T hangar (now bought by Atlantic) for my Stinson OY-1 NAHI airshow entry in 2012... they could not have been nicer. Call for manager and sell him (or her) on your adventure, maybe they will cut you a deal.

Re: High Sierra Logistics

Why not just fly the extra 500 miles from Reno to San Diego? A sub 4hr flight in the Maule?

Re: High Sierra Logistics

If time weren't an issue I would fly myself on down to San Diego. Unfortunately, time is an issue. I have a 180 up Maule and I cruise at about 115 Mph, so that 500 miles is more than 4 hours, especially if there are headwinds. The worst part is that my work in SD doesn't end until late Thursday. I can still get back to Reno that night on a commercial flight and get back to Dead Cow in my plane Friday AM. If I fly myself to and from San Diego in the Maule, I wind up missing most of Friday at Dead Cow as well as all of Thursday. I want to spend my time in the Nevada desert, not flying over California. I can't blow of the job because this work is what lets me afford the Maule. Sigh.
