Re: High Sierra updates- lack of

I would love to make it out to High Sierra sometime. It's caught and held my attention since I saw Zane's first video about it a few years back. It's too bad it's held so late in the year. Coming from northern Canada the chances of being weathered out and potentially having to ditch my airplane somewhere and take the airlines home rise exponentially as we get farther in to fall. I flew to Indianapolis for the Red Bull Air Race this year in the last week of September/first week of October and I can't say I'd be inclined to do a serious distance trip any later than that. We had weather issues for almost the entire trip and I just barely made it back home in time to be back at work.

Maybe I'll have to come down at a more hospitable time of year, camp out and check out some of the strips in the area. I could call it My Sierra :-)

A bunch of us from up here might just have to flock together and plan a trip down.

I too would like to hold it earlier but we would lose about 50 people do to their spray or farm work. Late is always nice as well with good cool flying weather.

I certainly think about it each year.

Just say when you guys are game and we will make it happen. Maybe a mini gathering!

Re: High Sierra updates- lack of

AKT is right. Much earlier and the desert can be unpleasantly warm. Even the Reno Air Races are often pretty uncomfortable if you don't have some shade. Well, shade and a blender making margaritas!

Also, while we're a tiny minority, some of us switch over from floats just in time to do this event. Float flying is still really nice in early October around here. But, since AKT ordered a set of Aerocets, you'll become very familiar with that!

If he's hinting about an earlier mini-HSF, then cool!

Weather was pretty much perfect this year. Earlier and you would get some pretty high DAs. Flying an under powered airplane it was nice to be able to relax a bit, and go some places that I would not if it was hotter.

Does anyone know/have any contact in for the guy that was out there with the Fly Baby. I have always been curious about their stol capabilities.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

I once flew through that area on my way from KSQL to KVGT in August in the mid afternoon, that was pretty much the definition of uncomfortably warm. :)

I was just checking out the historical weather for that area for September, definitely on the warm side at mid day especially camping out in an area with no cover at all (not that I wouldn't be willing to try!).

A mini gathering earlier in the fall or even in the spring would definitely be up my alley (weather, time off, and bank account permitting, of course!).

What else is out there for backcountry oriented fly-ins/events going on out there?
