Re: Homebuilt planes.!!!!!!

Many years ago a Thorp T-18 crashed while turning onto final at Oshkosh, It was caught on video as the wing fold up at the splice. The cause of the accident was when he build the plane he used 1/8 inch aluminum rivets in the wing spar splice where the plans called for 3/16 high-shear rivets.

I received a call from a friend at Dream Aircraft one spring five or six years ago while I was still building on mine. He told me of the recent crash of a Tundra from fuel mismanagement by a man that I met while in Quebec. The aircraft, equipped with floats, was forced to make a landing in the trees. One tree hit the front of the wing 4' in from the end of the wing. It caved the leading edge in to the spar but did not take the wing off. It did take the eight inch diameter tree down. The pilot was not injured and was able to exit through the door. He rebuilt his aircraft and it is flying today.

My advice is to treat aircraft building like your life depends on it. Building one is more than recreation.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

It's not possible to regulate stupidity be it certified or homebuilt....just saying.
