I just heard about this earlier today--and it is chilling. I've known of over-reacting LEOs in other contexts when I was regularly doing criminal defense work, and I saw it a few times when I was prosecuting when I was a USAF JAG eons ago, but this is as egregious as any I can recall.

Yes very chilling. I love the "we will drop the made up charges if you promise not to sue us." There seems to be an increasing amount of attempted airspace enforcement by agencies other then the FAA.

Why on earth would anyone not sue under these circumstances?

I heard once that there are more nuclear reactors in the Snake River Plain then anywhere else, per sq mile. They are not for power, but part of the INEL, for research and other purposes. The power plant for the original nuke sub was developed there. Any SE Idaho pilot ends up flying over it a lot, and the sectional is marked, "For reason of national security blah blah blah, but I feel they are pretty damn reasonable about it in this post 911 world. Stay above 6,000' (it may be 6500', too cold right now to go get the sectional) and you're golden. Pretty much 2,000' or less agl. They DO have a big security force, and if ever forced down there one would be wise to greet them while on your knees with your hands in the air, that's my plan anyway.

A glider for God's sake. About the same threat level as a hot air balloon.
Can you imagine trying to be at a certain place, at a certain time... to do harm to someone? And launch that plan with no power.
Might as well get a wrecked car and coast down a hill towards a power plant, with your BB gun in hand.
The sheer idiocy of a small town official, with a gun and some official capacity is clearly why we have the second ammendment. God help us all. Especially aviators... we are such a growing threat in the good ole USA.
