How to carry a Kayak onto a RANS!

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

I've received a few emails telling how stupid I was (am). I'm waiting for a call from the FAA.

To be honest I was telling myself the entire time, "DON'T HIT THE FLAP SWITCH". That would have been bad. I barely powered up on the runway to get a video of "taking off" then I powered off and turned around. You can see I had them pretty far outboard so the prop wash wouldn't hit them and even then I never used more than a little power.

I was definitely a bit embarrassed even taxiing around the airport with them, and even got a "WTF" on the radio.

But it was fun and the bottom line is, I didn't fly with kayaks on the wings.

By the way, if you missed this video it is the reason why that picture of the kayaks exists. Remember one word when watching the video. "Satire." This video went virile with the kayaking crowd and it was fun making it. http://vimeo.com/neygrant/kayaksonwings

I want to public apologize to Ney for calling him an idiot. I am the idiot for not fully reading the reason for his picture. To say I feel bad for my comment is an understatement. Lesson learned (I hope) and in the future I will try to 'READ" the caption of a picture before making rude comments.

I'd say Ney is a troll of legendary proportions. He's running about a 65% hit rate on revealing who the readers are and who the picture-lookers are. 8) The ratio's about the same wherever this is linked.

Thanks for the reminder to re-watch this great video. I think I detected a musical nod to a classic old paddling video from VHS days, with Live and Let Die in the soundtrack?? Guy getting his money's worth in a hole on the Bio Bio or Futaleufu, if I recall??
Well done, Flybikeski =D>

Re: How to carry a Kayak onto a RANS!

I'm another fan of folding kayaks. I have an older folboat, and they are quite a bit less expensive than the featherlight line. They are also heavier. My old Folboat weights about 80 pounds, but they have a 24 pound unit in their new catalog that only costs $1,000. The flying life is full of money versus weight trade offs. Still, the folboat may be worth looking into. I paddled mine all around Barkley Sound on the west side of Vancouver Island years ago. I loved every minute of that week long trip!

My Folboat is in the middle in this shot. The wooden Pygmy boat in the back and the fiberglass boat in front were easier to paddle (less drag), but I went everywhere the other two boats paddled and was able to carry all of my camping gear and food for a week without any problem.

Re: How to carry a Kayak onto a RANS!

This thread has me looking at folding kayaks too.

This one just came out and looks good, but one comment about it said the material is so lightweight you shouldn't rub the bottom on rocks/gravel. For a sea kayak that is much easier said than done!

As I posted on the RANSCLAN...Seeing this just makes me cringe!!! Friggin idiot has them tied around the flaps. The photo needs the caption:
"Why Women live longer"

Really? Any fool can see he won't need to use the flaps, there is going to be plenty of extra drag from the kayaks.

"Why Women Live Longer" is still a great subtitle, and I like Daedaluscan's comment too. Ney, your video had me laughing. Very nice work!

Had me in stitches back when you first posted and again now. Looking forward to exploring your book.
