How to not charge a battery.

I decided to pull my new battery out of the 182 before winter got to it. I don't usually use my cheap Schauer charger but It was only going to be used to top off the charge before storage. We'll I forgot about it Friday and Monday found it. Read your battery manual. These things require no more then 15v charge. Most of these cheap car chargers put out more then that.

Hmmmm, that is a bummer!! Hate to say this but I have used my automotive type charger several times for what looks like the same battery. I either use a low amperage motorcycle type or one that is 6 amp. max. What was the amperage of the charger you were using?

Re: How to not charge a battery.

One of the nice things about the Odyssey batteries is that they hold a charge really well....like 95% of their charge over the course of a year. The one I had in my 170 I never touched, though the airplane flew sorta regularly in winter. But, that airplane was outside in some brutally cold weather.

After I think seven years, I started thinking it was time to change the battery, so I removed the Odyssey, and installed a new one. The one I removed was still good, and my lawn tractor needed a battery, so I installed the old Odyssey in it. Parked it over winter....no disconnect, no nothing, parked in a cold shed in NW Minnesota. Next spring, I recalled my screw up, and figured I'd have a toasted battery. Put the key in the switch, turned it, and the lawn tractor fired right up.

That battery parked in that tractor all winter in cold, and held plenty of charge.

Unless you really, really run an Odyssey battery down, don't charge it.

Real bummer. I charge my airplane battery with a little 12v trickle charger--just 1.5 amps--it shuts off when the battery is charged, so hard to imagine it could do that kind of damage.

15 VOLT? I wouls say that a 12/14V aircraft battery shouldn't be charged at more than 12 volts. Did you mean amps? I have an old battery charger that I've owned for about 35 years, I can select 6 or 12 volt but it picks it's own charge rate. Never seen it charge more than about 6 amps or so, even with a totally flat battery.

Re: How to not charge a battery.

A good rule of thumb is most charging systems will charge between 13.8v-14.2v if working correctly.
A low amp charge is easier on your battery, a decent charger will ramp down as the battery reaches a full charge, preventing battery damage.

Re: How to not charge a battery.

You don't say what kind of battery it is, though it looks like an Odyssey. If so, then no need to charge before storage, they'll store for a couple years if the temperature isn't too high.
They are a little fussy on charging though, and like higher voltage. Better yet is something like a CTEK charger with the different charging programs. If using an oldschool manual charger, then 15v max and time limit according to the chart in the link below. Anyway, thanks for the pics of why they write all this stuff into tech advice.

Is it going to have a little battery? In any case I'm certain it's F%&ked. I know it's bad humor, but I couldn't help it . #-o
