I ARE NOW AN "A & P"

Well after working on aircraft for over 20-years I'm now legal. :D As of today Tuesday March 23, 2015 I am an FAA blessed "A & P". So if any of you are in the Kern Valley Airport "L05" area and need some help I can now help out and make a legal log book entry.

Congratulations. In my end of aviation, pilots were a dime a dozen but mechanics were worth their weight in gold.

Well done, let the signatures begin!
I need to add a US A&P to my list next time I'm over so I can sign out T53 turbine repairs through a US repair station.
Did you use a school or self study through one of the online Q&A websites to prepare for theory exams?

Re: I ARE NOW AN "A & P"

I've Been a wrench from high school. After working on F100, F101, F105, F-4 and more in the Air Force I raced sports cars and stock cars for 15+years befor moving to Alaska. I then switched back to aviation and have been studying and learning for years. I got a PMA in 2006 to build engine mounts and landing gear for old Pipers, then I got a Light Sport Repaiman rating in 2008. I just self studied and got an I/A to recommend me to the local FISDO. After that I went to Avtech in Riverside, CA for a two week cram course and started taking test. It's been a long road but it sure feels great right now, and there is only one left, I/A.

So what do you build, and for what? I'm sure getting that PMA wasn't a cake walk either.

Re: I ARE NOW AN "A & P"

I baught and now own an STC to convert Piper TriPacers (PA-22) from a nose dragger to the Pacer (PA-20) tail wheel configuration. So I applied to the FAA MIDO for a PMA (Parts Manufacturing Autherazation). After a two year effort I got approved. During that time a friend up in Alaska, Eddy Trimmer of Trimmer aviation got his STC approved to put a Lycoming 0-360, 180HP engine into the PA-16, 20 and 22's. He asked me to manufacture the mounts for him. Eddie now has many STC's for short wing Pipers and I manufacture most of the things he needs for his STC's.

Yes it's a pain in the A__. I get inspected evert year and the paper work and record keeping definatly adds additional cost to everything.

Re: I ARE NOW AN "A & P"

Congratulations on earning the A&P. I got mine in 1980. After being a newly minted A&P I went to the local 135 outfit in my town looking for work. The owner told me he didn't need any mechanics at the time but he needed pilots. I needed a job so I went for it. (Had all my ratings) Never did use the A&P professionally.

Interesting-- about the only PA22/20 STC you hear much about is the one sold by Univair. I'm even kinda thinking that someone else used to own that one, and they acquired it later. What do you call yours and do you advertise it? Do you have a website or something with the particulars?
