I made a thing

You might have to clear your cache to see it.

What is this? I needed some extra night footage for the recent video so I took a regular photograph and did some Photoshop surgery, animated a virtual 3D camera in After Effects to make some fabricated parallax. It feels more "real" than the Ken Burns effect.

Here are some much better done versions than mine. They make mine look like a toddler did it, but with a little practice, it can open up a whole new world of possibilities for creating video from very little footage. 8)

Great job. Now you don't need to take your slide thingy wherever you go.

That caught my eye Z when perusing the video. Very cool! Now I'm going to have to explore using it with cows... 8)

That is a cool thing you made. Cool that you were able to make that work with just a photo. 8)

Re: I made a thing

Great job!

If I can offer one addition. In After Effects, add a light source at the center of the fire, and keyframe the brightness. That should give you a smooth graduated fire light flame. Don't forget to slave the keyframes to your fuselage glow as well.

Awesome!

Re: I made a thing

You lost me at "cache", I like it though. I remember the first time I noticed, watching a Ken Burns, show, how that little thing he does really brings a still photo alive, pretty cool. I wonder if the people putting together porn sites know about this technique?

Re: I made a thing

reminds me of those mechanical rails they use for time lapse where the camera moves ever so slowly while doing a time lapse capture. i wish all this cool stuff had existed back when i had time to mess with it all in high school and college.

Those are good suggestions, it's just more time. This one took about 4 hours. I have to admit that After Effects is a little intimidating, and I'm a design professional (day job.) The compositing stuff is incredible but it looks to have a steep learning curve.

Re: I made a thing

good find Zane! Looks like you started with the original image showing the mountains, then painted a starry background and drew the airplane down (then reversed the shot?)

Thanks dude. And, now that I know the vocabulary, I found this useful one for the FCPX/Motion folks.

I cut the airplane out, then back-filled the hole using the clone tool. It was ugly. and as you can see it lost a little luster. If you can get a clean shot without the subject in addition, try for that. Since this was a technique to enhance an existing shot, I didn't have much to go on, but a better Photoshop warrior probably could have filled the cutout better.
