Idaho

Kitty and I are heading out to Johnson Creek for labor day weekend. Anybody else heading that way. Are there any fires in the area? Or any thing else we need to know? Would be great to see some of you again or meet you for the first time.

I was at JC last Saturday morning and it was clear. From JC, we flew over to Indian Creek and there was a little smoke but not bad. From Indian Creek to Caldwell we had some smoke from Deadwood Res. to Boise. Just depends on the wind direction. When I flew out of Boise on the airliner Tuesday morning, the smoke from the South Barker fire was blowing to the east and I can tell it was clear going up to the JC area.

Found this web site, kind of neat.

Have fun at JC this weekend if you go!!

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

I'm jealous too. Luckily I will be up there in a week. For WiFi, how far from the building is the signal still good?

Hey, could you find out when Gene and Cody are leaving for me? Thanks. I'm just wondering if they (and the vans) will be up there over the 8-10th.

Thanks,
GSP

Looking closer, I see that you are on your laptop in the pic. Good to know. Hope they will still be there so I can use it while I am there.

How cold did it get last night??

Bob, I first saw your Last Wish - An Airplane Ride video months ago and honestly it is the most moving aviation video that I have seen. I only hope that someone will be generous enough to do that for me when the time comes. Good on ya!

They are all great though... keep them coming!

Mark mentioned that we had met in Big Creek. Talk about luck, I was first planning on flying into Johnson Creek and taking the Van into town. I flew over JC and decided to go on over to Big Creek for breakfast. I had just parked and was starting to walk to the lodge when I spotted Marks Maule and Kitty was inside and Mark was just getting in. I yelled Mark and his head flew up and he looked up and said who are you. I told him I was skybobb and we shook hands and Kitty got out of the airplane and I gave her a hug. What a lucky break that I got there just as we did. Bob

Kitty and I are the only ones here. It is cold and been raining off and on for two days. There were four airplanes here most of the weekend and a couple extras overnight on Friday night. As usual these pilots were so much fun to be with. The best people in the world at Johnson Creek!

Cody is leaving on the 15th. Gene will be here most of September. He has been asked to stay longer closing up. They are such gracious people.

Today they put away a lot of the picnic tables and Gene said he was going to put the vehicles into storage....not sure where that is.

Cody is so grateful to those of you who donated toward her computer. There is no antenna up for the wifi so you have to be in line of site of their house up to about 50 yards or so. Cody if you read this please comment and correct.

Temps have been in the 60's during the day and upper 40's at night. No fires that I'm aware of. Been doing limited flying. Seems you can go west to McCall or Cascade but going east is a little more than I'm comfortable with although I did hear Ray Arnold going to Sulphur Creek this morning and talking about snow above 8 thousand feet. We were hunting for a place to have breakfast this morning. Got to Bruce meadows and visibility ahead was limited so we went to McCall and ate at the Pancake house.

Skybobb, wish we could have had more time to lie to each other about flying.

Butch, We went to Cabin Creek on Saturday....but no fly rod...Dang!

Best wishes all! Wish you were here too. Pretty lonely here! By the way there is a time lapse of JC.

Johnson Creek Update

Hi all,

Yes, I will be leaving the airport sometime the week of the 15th, but the actual date is up in the air. Gene will remain for a short time. The State maintenance crew will be coming in soon to drain all the pipes for the irrigation. Not exactly positive when Gene will drain all the campground pipes but the north end campground is closed as of today. The rush is starting with us trying to get everything put away, drained, closed down, packed up and out of here before the maintenance crew comes in for final shut down. They have to get all their work done prior to freezing weather.

The best I can say is that immediately after Labor Day the airport is officially closed regarding amenities. The runway, restrooms (not the shower) and pilot phone remain available year-round, as does the webcam, unless something unexpected occurs. We cannot promise that we can accommodate any pilots with courtesy cars, water, WIFI, showers, bunk houses, or anything else once the Labor Day weekend has passed. Too bad this isn't a year round position.

I was pleased to learn last night that Mark was able to get WIFI at the picnic table under the Welcome Center roof. The signal was OK as long as someone didn't step in the direct path of the signal. With time slipping away this season, WIFI signal strength will be something to work toward next spring. The telephone lineman for this area is an expert with telephones and does a very good job with internet, dial-up and WIFI, as long as it is with their own equipment. However, it is out of his area of expertise regarding boosters, antennas or other WIFI brand name equipment.

So - with that being said - hope everyone has a great year. And we hope to see you soon.

Codykid,

I feel a lingering sadness all the way back here in Missouri that the season at Johnson Creek is coming to a close already.

My son and I were there in mid June this year. We met Gene...had a wonderful 2 nights and three days there. Experienced everything from picking and cooking mushrooms..... Gene gave us some flower to use on the mushrooms. We had dinner at Yellow Pine, some beautiful weather, a five inch snowfall, bath in the tub up on the mountian side and a 12 mile hike which included a brown bear, momma moose and her calf.

Can't wait to come back again. My wife and I may try to make the trip in 2009. Makes me wish that we lived out your way. Tell Gene that Bob and Craig said hi....we were there in a blue and white Maule. No one else was there overnight. Enjoyed our time so very much.

Thank you and have a safe winter.

Bob
