Idaho wolf hunting

I'm heading to Idaho on Wednesday to get some flying in and, as an avid predator hunter, do some wolf hunting. I found wolf tracks at a couple locations last April while floating Marsh Creek to the Middle Fork. Bruce meadows is the closest airstrip to where I found those tracks. I found wolf sign two years ago at Chamberlain, but also heard coyotes howling there.
Any of you Idaho guys have suggestions for strips in the area of good wolf hunting?
I'm not afraid of putting on some walking miles, I intend to use calls, but spot and stalk would be awesome.

Re: Idaho wolf hunting

Used to hunt for a living, and what I have to offer won’t be the most exciting to hear. Wolves are encountered typically on long hunts, for other species. I’ve chased them with the camera since after having shot and guided too many for my liking, and have spent years afield to get good opportunities. The more I’ve learned about them and watched them, the less interest I have in killing them, unsurprisingly they’re the animal most like us. Hence man’s best friend, we’re kidding ourselves if we think our dogs are so different. This said, I’m not going to tell another they shouldn’t do what I used to, and what’s legal can be done and I’m not one to judge.

Long story short, the odds of encountering wolves on a single fly in wolf specific trip are extremely low. Possible, sure, but very unlikely. Guys have some success calling them, and as a predator hunter you’ll know what to do there. On a short hunt that’s really going to be the only way. Seeing tracks is incredibly common, seeing wolves is rare.

As a former avid hunter I follow what your saying 100% and support the rights of anyone who chooses too. Those photos are simply amazing; my experience is similar too yours, wolves are by far one to the hardest wild animals to locate and time is your best tools for the opportunity.

Lots of wolves in idaho these days. Spend time behind good glass in big country and you'll find them.
