imron or jet glo or.....

Wondering if Imron is still the go to paint to use? I have heard of Jet Glo, not sure if I've seen that on our spam cans. Wondering if there are better alternatives before I get to painting this weekend.

Re: imron or jet glo or.....

Imron is still the go to product for me. The AF400 is the formulation I am currently using on my C-205 project.. Goes on fairly easy, although not as easy as some. The difference is it stays flexible, which is really important. I painted the fuselage of my C-182 with Imron 18 years ago, and it still has the same shine it did in the beginning. Its a working airplane, and although hangared it spends many of its days out in the sun. PPG Concept is easier to use, but work hardens, looses its shine, and flakes after a while. A good aircraft primer is Dupont Chromium Based Epoxy.

Any experience with PPG Delta? Supposedly has more flex agent. I know a guy who shoots it on fabric.

Edit: just googled it. Supposedly discontinued and replaced with a product called Delfleet One.

Flex agents go away over time. They're not designed for repeated flexing either. They came out when the flexible bumpers and stuff came on the scene.

Re: imron or jet glo or.....

Thanks I’ll stick with imron.

Anyone use citristrip, have some I found at Home Depot. I’ve used it on smaller aluminum parts and worked ok but not on large surfaces before.

I have used citristrip and liked it, not sure if it can cause hydrogen embrittlement. Spring steel landing gears are the most critical area of concern regarding this. I like Jet Glo.

Endura epoxy paint is good it tough like steel doesn’t fade and always wet. Only down fall it’s fairly high on the toxicity scale when applying it. Ppe needed

Wow Jared, looks like you have the Jet glo figured out. Beautiful work! I certainly can't match that.

Jet-Glo...
Imron is not the same formula as it was 20 years ago. Watch for "solvent pop" on Jet Glo shooting with higher ambient temps, but it flows really well.

I like Endura too, but it does fade.

Re: imron or jet glo or.....

In our shop the deciding factor between Jetglo and Imron AF400/700 is the 'custom color matching'. Sherwin Williams, requires us to get custom colors made across the country, and our Imron dealer can cross reference almost every code, in house, and custom make a formula in the AF400/700 line of paints for us. Both these paints work great with the Sherwin Williams CMO 483705?? primer which is our go to primer for everything.

So if the customer chooses Jet Glo, with a color code, we go with that, if the customer supplies a 'toyota tundra blue' color code, we go with Imron.

Endura is making a comeback though, they sent their paint rep from california up to our shop, and informed us of some new products that they have, along with the fact that they will issue a letter and warranty their paint applied overtop of a competitors primer, which none of the other paint companies will do. Endura also has a couple of new clear coats for helicopter tail booms, and flametracks on turbine engine aircraft, that makes the soot wash off, with water and a rag. They gave us enough to paint our flame tracks on our King Air, to test and try to up sell to customers.

The endura rep from california, said that he actually makes the paint formulas, and thinks we will be happy using their paint for the gloss finish years down the road, as he has adjusted the formulas to make the reds stay glossy longer, and their price point is actually quite competitive.

In closing, you will be happy with either the Imron or the Sherwin Williams Jetglo Paint. They last, they are a hard paint (take a bit of a beating), and they color match fairly well years down the road, because they don't fade that much.

Sounds like you own or work at Upper Valley Aviation?
A friend of mine had his 180 painted there a few years ago,
and it turned out georgeous!
I've seen another couple that you guys did since then,
they were really nice too.

I'm the shop manager/project manager at Upper Valley Aviation. Been here for about 8 years now. The painters have a way of making my work look good, lol. The team we have here definitely strives to make beautiful paint jobs that meet or exceed the customers expectations.
