Amen. We have to take them apart and back together in our AME program. Takes about 15 minutes and that includes explining the oil passage ways and what all the parts do to the teacher...

Those are my thoughts exactly.

I agree. I took it apart after calling a shop and being told it will cost more to overhaul (because it is so old) than to buy new. Looking at it I couldn't figure out what was going to cost $1500.

Oh you experimental guys are so quick to poo poo certified guys and mechanics. After you pulled that governor apart, did find any liability inside it???

All i found inside was some really black oil

There is no visual wear on anything. I don't have a manual, and can't find one, so I can't do a dimensional inspection. A SB on long term storage states "Critical inspection areas for governors are I.D. of drive gear, O.D. of the pilot spool, and "toes" of flyweight." These areas show no wear. No parts or gaskets are available unless you can find a repair station that is willing to sell them. There is only one gasket which would be easy to make, the rest are o-rings.

Mine is old enough that I'm planning on replacing it but it is tempting to reseal this one and use it.

Quick story.

When I was a kid I liked boats and looked at boat classified ads in a magazine like our Trade A Plane. I was stunned by how EXPENSIVE boats were!

Fast forward and I'm a pilot with my own plane.

I'm at the dentist and they have a Trade A Boat or whatever it is called and I'm looking at the ads.

I was stunned by how CHEAP boats are (compared to planes).

Funny how planes screw up perspective.
