Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

Hey guys, do you have a rough estimate of how long it takes to install the BAS Shoulder Harness on a 1957 Cessna 182? Thanks!

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

When I had mine installed in my P172D, it took most of a day. But my IA was doing several things to the airplane, so it's a little hard for me to say how much of that day was devoted to the harnesses.

You won't be sorry--they're great harnesses.

I helped my IA do them, and I would est between 2-4 hours.

As mentioned, they are worth every penny.

Thanks for the replies. This will be the first mod for the new to me 182. seems like it will work better than the oem lap belts.

That was probably one of the most important places to start spending money. You will like them.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

I've installed Pacific Scientific 5point in the Citabria, but they aren't cheap.

Hooker harnesses are pretty popular too. I see American Champion has them as an option in all their aircraft. I use one in the Pitts.

The price is cheap no matter what compared to the alternative, I have lost three friends in crashes that they should have lived, if they had shoulder harnesses on, the instrument panel got them all.

I am ordering a set of Schroth 5 points with inertia reels that are engineered for my 2001 Husky A1B. Thought you might be interested in these:

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

I think it was about 4-5 hours for our 1970 182. Probably was another hour to do all the paperwork...

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

I've got a set in my 180. Very comfortable- they don't rub the sides of my neck as bad as I thought they would. Which type buckles are you getting-- "seaplane" or standard? I have the standard, don't know if I'd find the seaplane style convenient, esp when it's time to crawl into the back of the airplane.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

I have the standard buckles in mine. When I took the seaplane training last summer, the airplane was nearly a clone of mine (a year newer) but had the BAS seaplane buckles. At first I found them to be a pain in the neck, because I'd drop one or the other as I tried to get them lined up, but soon I got accustomed to them and could get them buckled relatively quickly. BAS puts velcro tabs on them, and the other piece of Velcro is supposed to go on the headliner just above the windshield, to get them out of the way. Those weren't in the seaplane, though, so it was always a hunt for the shoulder straps.

The seaplane version definitely gets out of the way quicker when unbuckled, which is a need when exiting a seaplane quickly to dock. But for a land plane, I'd stick with the standard buckle. I think it's a lot more convenient most of the time. I just buckle it behind me before getting out.

I guess I had my terminology mixed up-- my airplane has the separate shoulder straps, which is the utility aka seaplane style. The standard style buckles have the shoulder straps affixed to the belt buckles. I just let my shoulder straps hang down from the overhead, and when it's time to buckle up I just reach back over my head and grab them. No big deal. What I like about this style is that when I pull the front seats to crawl around inside the airplane to work on something, I can just tuck the hanging shoulder straps behind the folded jump seats on the side of the airplane, or bring them forward and hook them to the v-brace, to get them out of the way.
I wondered about the Velcro-- mine has it on the shoulder straps but there's no corresponding Velcro mounted anywhere inside the airplane to stick them to.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

Put four small velco attachments up near where windshield meets headliner maybe four inches back. That will fix that problem.

I don't think I'll bother- my current arrangement works OK for me.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

If you have Rosen visors you can hang your harness of the top of the visor after you take them off. That's what I do to keep them out of the way.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

So...how long did the install take? I'm resurrecting this thread because my new plane doesn't have them. I ordered them as soon as I got the plane home and could match the previously ordered color samples to the interior. I'll be installing them this Saturday. Any insights would be appreciated.

Re: Install time of BAS Shoulder Harness

If getting BAS harnesses is in your future, (it should be if it isn't) then I HIGHLY suggest you get the seaplane version. Just think quick exit. As much "water skiing" as some like to do here, imagine it going bad and being upside down in the water trying to get out not being able to see anything, now imagine after getting unbuckled you get hung up on the standard type lap and shoulder strap that is solidly attached at the buckle, not good! This could also apply on land with fire. I choose more safety over less hassle every time.

Just my thoughts on that subject....
