Intermittent switch contact help.

For several years now my JPI fuel flow meter has a problem with the push buttons making contact.

This happens in the winter when the Maule sits for 2 weeks or more. I have a non heated hangar. I fly to the beach regularly, salt air.

If I push the buttons like 50 times I can get it to make contact.

Here lately the Garmin 430W has started to have the button problem, but 2 or 3 pushes gets contact.

The problem seems to go away as the weather warms up and I fly more.

Has anyone else had this happen? What did or what do you do to fix it or make it better?

Thanks Rob

It depends. If those are membrane switches then no amount of spray on stuff will make any difference. Then again, if they are membrane switches they should not be affected by weather. If the contact are sealed but only kinda sealed you need to get some de-oxit down in there somehow. This may require partial disassembly of the unit.....like removing the bottom panel or something. This is the stuff for sure. It will bring anything back from the dead.

Re: Intermittent switch contact help.

If your talking about the JPI flowscan, the buttons are not sealed. Each button is just two pads on the printed circuit board that are bridged by the button when you press it, so either the contact on the button or the circuit board is dirty (maybe, not sure why temperature would affect that). Either way, that unit is pretty easy to remove a couple screws, pull the instrument face off, remove the button membrane and clean the contacts. Beyond that, I'm not sure.
